I'm afraid I found this series to be somewhat disappointing. From what I had read beforehand I had gotten the impression that Kei and Yuri were always inadvertantly destroying things and even getting lots of innocent bystanders killed, but that this was handled in a hilarious manner--perhaps I expected them to be something like Minnie from Gunsmith Cats. Maybe this wasn't even the same series as I had been reading about--as I sat down to write this review I realised that Gee, just because this is called the "original" Dirty Pair doesn't necessarily mean it was the first Dirty Pair! (I guess that's why it was never explained what sort of animal the pair's pet, "Mughi", is). There certainly are lots of munitions being expended, but I never really sensed any particularly clever humor about it. In the fifth episode I even got the feeling that a city getting devastated had been "tacked on" without having much of anything to do with the story--was that supposed to be funny? Episode nine ("Red Eyes, A Sign from Hell!") was unusually grisly, including scenes of injured men being riddled with bullets as they lie helpless (and I actually thought this was one of the better episodes!). In general, the plots seemed kind of simplistic and predictable--I knew right off that "Uncle Bill" was the bad guy in episode eight ("Sleeping Beauty"). The overall quality kind of reminded me of the feelings I had while watching Urusei Yatsura once--old, 80's animation and semi-funny jokes. I think the only serious laugh I got out of the last volume came when it was revealed that there will someday be a "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Lasers". I guess it's worth watching once, but for me, just barely. Well, at least I now know that the Japanese are familiar with the holiday of Halloween! My favorite line: "The only thing we destroyed this time was a religious shrine!" 7/03 #46 Last updated Monday, February 11 2008. Created Saturday, July 26 2003.

This OAV series came out in the late 80's as a sequel to the TV series. Of note, the girl's skimpy uniforms have changed in color, otherwise most everything else is the same.
I hate to say this, but I have a weak spot for this series. When I came to Japan in 1989, I wasn't interested in anime yet I knew all about Dirty Pair. Go figure. It must have something to do with their outfits. And speaking of their outfits, it is funny how the girls where those skimpy things when going into battle while the male characters go in with full mecha body armor (first epsisode is a perfect example of this). Bottom line: animation is dated, but there are still quite a few chuckles to be found in this series. If you enjoyed the original series, you'll enjoy this one. Well worth a rent to see some "classic" anime. Last updated Wednesday, July 16 2003. Created Tuesday, April 22 2003.
