i wouldn't buy this series, as who knows what the 4kids licensing company is gonna do to it. i mean, the dub was pretty good i admit, but it just doesn't level with the original. i already see things i know they're gonna cut out. but who knows, maybe they'll release an uncut version. anywho, if you like shonen anime, they by all means, buy this anime. but if not, then this is at least worth a watch.

it's predictable of course, and there's the annoyingly repetitive fighting (of which i fast forward through), but somehow, this series still manages to impress me. the character designs are weird but bearable, the music is actually decent (especially the second season op). the animation is nice and simplified, but the fighting scenes are actually nothing unique and disappointing since they involved cut scenes and the like.

the cast of characters is amazing. there's just so many, and though there's nothing in this series that could be seriously considered angsty, we still get to see some depth to most of the characters and backstories to the supporting characters. the humor is actually humor, and had me laughing at moments. seeing as how its mostly an all male cast there are very slight yaoi is it? overtones and themes at times. sometimes for the humor.

like i've said the fighting isn't anything worth mentioning, but i think its what makes it different from the likes of pokemon and yugioh. there's a psychological aspect to their "upgrading" that's not entirely to "defeat the enemy" that stands before them. and i think the relationships between our main cast is what pulls me in. not all things are said out loud but you see how each member feels about yoh and about themselves. and most beautiful is the relationship between anna and yoh, because hardly anything is said there at all. but you still know they care about each other.

i dont know. i don't really know what keeps me with this anime, and after 64 episodes i don't remember most of the things that impress me. maybe i'm reading and seeing things just because i like it. but this series is definitely worth watching if not buying. because no matter what it IS a definite step up from other kiddy anime like yugioh and pokemon.

I am reviewing the fan-subbed version, and I have been able to view some 35 of the 64 episodes in entire series. One of other reviewers describes this a Pokemon type series which, I am afraid to admit, is very true.
Asakura Yoh is a laid back spiritual shaman, who has come to realize that if he could become the Shaman King then he could really enjoy a kickback leisurely lifestyle. The only major challenge to Yoh becoming the Shaman King, is that he is going to have to win a global contest in which about a 1000 different Shaman all have to fight each other, to determine who is the strongest. So with the help of his sidekick, the normal-every-boy Manta, the two start off on a quest of combat and adventure.
Being a Shaman means that you have an ability to see, communicate, and use the undead spirits who have not yet moved on. Yoh has a bond with the spirit of an ancient samurai warrior, while other Shamans draw their strength from different spirits. As the series progresses, Yoh has to learn different spirit bonding techniques, as his competence and abilities improve.
There is good character development, as Yoh becomes the leader of a group of competing Shamans who travel to the site of the final competition.
I have to admit that Shaman King reminded very much of a RPG (role playing game), in which the main character improves in both abilities and skills - (oops, did you know that they have a PS2 game out already$$) Some of the abilities of the other Shamans are really interesting, such as the necromancer (who controls the undead) or the priestess and her army of frozen undead.
This series has a quirky style of exaggerated animation in which the characters are all a bit off center. Yoh appears as a very 1960s laid back shaman, (complete with a set of Birkenstocks.), his fiancée Ana is the tall slender spoilt brat of a princess, and all of the characters suffer from a similar caricature distortion. In short, they are all very weird group of people with very weird abilities. If you are bothered by this type of anime, then you will not enjoy this series.
So like Pokemon, this adventure series proves to be very entertaining, but without having to worry about any serious message or intent. It is well worth the rent if this is your style of anime. (Now, lets all wait for the pending marketing blitz that comes with an overhyped popular anime series)

At first this series was quite good. But as the stories went on, it turned sort of into a pokemon type thing. The story was quite good, the character design was not very attracting. The best thing about it, is that it's funny. The bad thing was further on, the story gets quite predictacble.
