Misaki no Mayoiga
House of the Lost on the Cape mixes drama and supernatural elements involving Yui and Hiyori being adopted by the elderly Kiwa while dealing with personal traumas with the former a teen runaway due to dealing with her abusive father and the latter left mute from the shock of losing her parents. The three become an adoptive family unit for one another and there is gradual development shown of Yui and Hiyori getting over their personal issues. Focus on just this angle of the film would have made for a decent story on its own. But it also implements elements of Japanese folklore as Kiwa is revealed to have ties to Japanese spirits and tells different stories to the two girls regarding the connections between humans and youkai. While the film does do a decent job blending these elements together, the biggest issue with implementing the supernatural angle is that it gives me the impression the anime may have had a larger story in mind with the various spirits and townsfolk introduced. But the movie format doesn't have the time to further explore more of this and as a result, the supernatural elements feel like they aren't as fully realized, all the way down to the rather typical climactic battle with a powerful youkai. In short, this film is a bit of a mixed bag. Its mundane elements focused on exploring the traumas and developments of Yui and Hiyori make for its strongest element. But the supernatural lore could have made this more into its own TV series.
