In a world split between the Inside and the Outside, those living in both realms are told never to cross over to the other side, lest they be cursed. A young girl named Shiva lives in a vacant village with a demonic guardian known only as 'Teacher.' Although the two are forbidden to touch, they seem to share a bond that transcends their disparate appearances. But when Shiva leaves Teacher's care to seek out her grandmother, the secret behind her mysterious living arrangement comes to light.

(Three (all?) episodes watched):

I'm guessing that OVA 1 from three years ago was a sort of a preview which was successful in leading to the making of this Kickstarter funded series (there is a lengthy list of donors at the end of episode one). 'Sensei', as Shiva calls him (he cannot remember his own name), saves her from being slaughtered as a 'Cursed Insider', and takes her in. Shiva is a cheerful girl oblivious to what the soldiers had in store for her, and while most would be terrified of Sensei she likes him. He is powerful but cursed--"Pain, warmth--I have forgotten most things" he says. And that's about where things stand after one episode, which is why I needed to use the ANN synopsis. But these are clearly sophisticated characters and this promises to be a cerebral show, unlike most.

In episode two we learn that Sensei was once an ordinary human with a wife and children. Another Outsider (I think) visits and seemingly wants him to turn Shiva over to them. He refuses, and decides he needs to find a safe human community for Shiva somewhere. In episode three Sensei and Shiva have a bizarre experience that begins with them sinking into a pond (somehow they do not drown). And, apparently that's it--the story seems to be complete. I had thought it would be around a dozen episodes long if not more. A stylistic, artistic conclusion which unfortunately makes little or no sense to me.
