I don't really see how this would be considered a futuristic sequel to the Saber Marionette J franchise as this series seemed more like a stale prototype of what would be improved quality-wise for the later J titles. Saber Marionette R features many of the same elements you would find with the later J titles: planet populated entirely by male clones, female robots called marionettes serving the human populace, the Saber Dolls behaving like humans and committed to the well-being of the male lead, evil male antagonist out to take over the planet with his own trio of marionettes similar to the male lead. The Saber Dolls appear much younger in Saber Marionette R and while Lime and Cherry retain their personalities in the later J titles, Bloodberry proves to be the more level-headed, rational member of the trio in this series.

This series runs on a darker mood than the J titles, though it is considerably weaker quality wise. Star Face and his Sexadolls are pretty shallow as villains compared to Faust and his marionette trio where we don't really get to know much of why they are committed to wanting to off Junior, his father and the Saber Dolls. The Sexadolls are quite over-the-top as villains considering their orgasmic enjoyment of both getting molested by Star Face and their enjoyment of the suffering of their foes. The series also makes attempts at comedy, yet the title's darker mood makes such scenes quite ineffective in their delivery during serious moments.

This is worth a look if you enjoyed the Saber Marionette J franchise with Otaru and his Saber Dolls, but don't expect R to be as decent as the J titles.

This latest series in the Saber Marionette franchise is rather disappointing and pointless. What could have been an interesting exploration of life 200 years after Saber Marionette J to X is wasted on a pointless villian and sexual imagery.

Star Face-sama is an even weaker villian than the original Faust-sama in that he was so stereo-typically "evil" as to be a joke. His sex-a-doll's are pointless versions of the Saber Dolls in the original series. Guess what sex-a-dolls specialize in when they aren't having orgasms over killing folks? We don't know why he decided to create the sex-a-dolls nor do we know what possessed him to do the things he is doing. I suppose being ruler is enough, but I like to know the whys.

Another thing I would have enjoyed seeing was some sort of reference to the original series beyond the name of Junior-sama's saber dolls. An exploration of what had happened over the 200 year period would have been nice. Why are there still so few women around that cloning still takes place? These are some things I would have liked to have known.

On the other hand, I still like Bloodberry, Cherry, and Lime despite their new too-cute-by-half character designs. While Lime and Cherry are mostly copies of the originals, Bloodberry is now the mature one of the trio. She's still an excellent fighter, but she's a leader. I understood why Junior's father used her as a bodyguard and trusted advisor.

SMR is much darker than the other titles, but it does try to inject comedy. Unfortunately, it fell short for me. The jokes are the same ones from SMJ. For example, Cherry fantasizes about going all the way with Junior-sama at one point much as the original Cherry did with Otaru. However, because the situation is so dire, the joke becomes very inappropriate on top of being old. As such, it doesn't work.

Bottom line: Fans of the franchise will want to watch this to complete the anime portion. Otherwise, there's not a lot of point in watching this.

Watch 3 Devil Doll [series:453#752]
I happened to see this one on TV without knowing the rest of the series - and I totally failed to get the point.
The story line doesn't stand for its own well enough; it didn't make sense to me at all. But given there is a larger background - I might try again one day.

Rent 9 9 9 9 9 Jack Walrath [series:453#375]
This story is darker than than SMJ. However, it is still a good watch. It is a nice quick story and the stars are still likebale. The only two problems are that the villains ate very vicious and that the character designs for Junior and the marionettes are really strange looking.
