Hideto Tsuji was a soccer star in middle school. But his success seemed to depend on close teamwork with a friend, and when that friend left the team his own performance fell off drastically and he abandoned the sport. Now in High School he has little desire to take soccer up again--until his old friend reappears, and the school coach aggressively recruits him.

This show seemed to be so riddled with stereotypes that I had a hard time taking it seriously. The highly talented protagonist who has (temporarily) soured on his sport; the coach who was once an international star; the terrible team with proud traditions; the fiery player who substitutes raw emotion for brainwork--we've seen them all before. The only possibly intriguing bit was the reunion between Tsuji and his old friend who is now on an opposing team. But even that didn't excite me much, perhaps because it's never really explained why they needed each other. Also, the characters don't seem very deep and interesting. Tsuji seems to have little motivation other than he'd like to be an admired star once again (his character design reminds me of one from an old Gundam series). Red-haired Jo is fanatically devoted not just to his team but to the sport of soccer itself; he will 'never forgive' Tsuji because he interprets a smirk on his face at one point as an insult to the sport as a whole. This show was released early in the first week of the season, but I kept delaying watching it because I was kind of tired of sports anime and nothing extraordinary lept out at me right from the start. Now I think those first impressions were correct and I will pass on this show. If I wanted a recently released anime about soccer I think I would watch Ao Ashi instead.
