Haru Nabutame ('Harurun'), Kyoka Tamaki ('O-Kyon') and Rio Seibu were entranced by a performance of famous Idol Hotaru and decided to form an Idol group themselves. But their group, 'TiNgS', has met a distinct lack of success and their producer, Yuki, threatens to let them go unless they sell out a sizable performance within three months. Their last chance is a new manager, Naoki Hinase, who has a reputation for talent and ability but also for having a 'difficult' personality. Naoki has a unique ability for detecting lies, but in Haru he senses a sincere person whose dream is the same as his.

(Three-and-a-half episodes watched)

The fact that the synopsis above is fairly lengthy is indicative of what initially seemed a likewise fairly complex and interesting plot with fairly complex characters to me. And the jokes of episode one were good, too. I concluded that the fact that my initial review was so short was indicative of a show with nothing to complain about. I had thought that another season of Love Live Superstar would surely be the best Idol anime of the season, but maybe this one would be even better. Episode two wasn't as much fun as episode one, however. Why did Naoki waste valuable time with the girls trying to sell tickets on a street when he was capable of mustering a good sized audience composed entirely of Idol critics and experts? Is he trying to teach them something? What was this 'magic' that Haru had? And where did Naoki get his unique ability to tell when people are lying? The answers weren't apparent and as a result I felt a little frustrated with episode two. And neither episode three nor four was as much fun as episode one had been, either. Perhaps the problem was that the characters had started fairly complex, but hadn't gotten any more so since then. Kyoka's resistance to being the lead performer in an act, as Naoki insists, felt tiresome. She seems more angry than fearful that she might fail, which makes it hard to sympathize with her. And the jokes had pretty much vanished. This is all kind of a pity, because the quality of the animation and graphics of this show are above average. My interest in this show fell off rapidly and I decided to quit watching halfway through episode four. It is pretty obvious that TiNgS will eventually combine with another two-girl group at the same agency, but my curiousity regarding how that would come about had largely evaporated.
