Café “Kuronekotei” boasts an unusual roster of employees. A group of automata, or autonomous mechanical dolls, serve their patrons with a smile, but they weren’t always so suited to domestic life. Just a few years prior, automata served as weapons in the great war, fulfilling the bloody purpose for which they were created. Now that the war has ended, these machines with human hearts search for their place in an unfamiliar, peaceful world — and their search begins at the Kuronekotei café.

(One episode watched):

Why are fighting robots so often designed to look like cute girls? To screw with the minds of enemy soldiers? It would make more sense if the self-aware minds of mecha were transferred to girl-like bodies after a war to make themselves useful in human-like roles. Anyway, here are more of them. Pink-haired Haizakura awakens in a lab with no memory of her past. She wants to be useful but seems completely useless. She helps a human friend link up with Yugiri, the Automata that once served as her caretaker. I could not get excited about either Haizakura or Yugiri's stories and was impatient for episode one to end. Neither of them displayed enough personality for me to care much about their fates and this show as a whole didn't seem particularly original in comparison to all the series about Dolls that have come before. I suspect the stories behind each of these five Dolls will be told. At least I didn't notice any overt fanservice. But this show just never piqued my interest. To be fair, I was rather tired when I watched it; maybe others would find it more engaging than I did.
