Ichigo Momomiya is a new high school student who wants to fall in love. She is entranced by Masaya Aoyama, a handsome, athletic and nice boy. A strange, dark blue-haired girl helps arrange a date between the two of them. But this girl had an ulterior motive and Ichigo has a surprise in store when she learns of magical powers she possesses. Magical powers related to cats, that is.

(Two episodes watched):

I had thought the title of this show was Tokyo Mew Mew Mew, not 'New', and hadn't noticed that this show is some sort of sequel or reboot. In fact there seems to have been an original series which played all over the world between 2002 and 2008 (in fact, we have a page for it). Anyway, this show seemed to have a silly tone which appealed to me. Rather than the most simple, bare-bones plot (which is what we usually get) I sensed a fairly complex one coming together. In the end what happened--a character learns they have extraordinary powers and a secret threat that demands their use exists--wasn't all that novel. But this show might make a little more effort than most to deliver quality entertainment, so maybe I will watch some more despite it apparently being designed for little girls. One thing I noticed while creating this page was that all of the principal VAs seem to be newcomers. I watched a second episode, in which the green-haired girl 'Lettuce' is introduced. We learn a bit more about where these 'cryptid animas' (or whatever) dangerous animals are coming from and how Mew Mew girls themselves are created. But my interest fizzled out as a series of stereotypes appeared--girls working in a maid cafe, a girl subtly bullied by her supposed friends, a mysterious villain--etc. I got the impression that this show was not meant for thinking adults, and that my time would be better spent elsewhere.
