Saybil is a strange boy. He has no memory of anything that happened to him before he enrolled in the Royal Academy of Magic in the Kingdom of Wenias. He is seen as gloomy and mysterious and is the lowest ranking student at the school. He is given one last chance to avoid expulsion: go to a special village that is being set up in the South as a refuge for persecuted Witches, and become a mage there. He will spend three years there, and if his supervisor is satisfied with his performance will be reinstated at the Academy; if not, all of his memories of magic will be erased. He accompanies Loux Krystal, 'The Dawn Witch', Kudo, a lizard-man (or 'Beastfallen'), and star student Hort, a red-haired girl.

Well, I initially got the impression that this was a show which was taking a good deal more trouble than most sword and sorcery anime to tell an interesting story. Most shows seem to minimize the elements included, and not include anything they don't absolutely have to, but here the dialogue is fairly rich and better thought-out. Touches like the way Loux figured out what had actually happened when Kudo's party was attacked stand out. The jokes are OK, too. I am left fairly intrigued: who was that woman who sent Saybil to the Academy (if I understood things correctly)? Why did Loux want to be allowed to examine the 'Grimore of Zero'? What was the meaning of the Headmaster's warning that she might not recognize its author? Loux sort of annoyed me at first as she seemed like yet another petulant child (but awesome magician) character, but she behaves responsibly afterwards. We meet a number of likable characters. Come to think of it, I don't think anybody got killed in episode one, which is unusual. As a result, this show seemed like fun.

Episode two was not as much fun, however. I was annoyed by the 100% evil witch killer (with sharpened teeth). There didn't seem to be anything unusual about this episode, in fact all of a sudden this show was seeming pretty generic. Apparently this is a sequel or spinoff of The Grimoire of Zero, which I didn't watch.
