Fudo Aikawa, AKA 'Red Gelato', is the leader of 'Freezing Sentai Gelato 5', a Power Rangers-like crime fighting team. Their enemy is Secret Society Gekko, an evil organization bent on world domination. One of Gekko's star fighters is Desumi Mazahara, or 'The Reaper Princess'. What nobody else knows, however, is that Fudo and Desumi are secretly dating.

Imagine if the lead hero and villain within a Super Sentai series were dating and you get the premise of Love After World Domination in a nutshell. The series gets its humor blending the typical elements of a tokusatsu series and a high school rom-com as the girls among the villainous Princess Series and a few of the Gelato 5 are still typical teens putting up with some of the complications of romance, growing up, and their family lives meshed with the typical Super Sentai elements. I'll admit this blend is a bit hit or miss as I did get enjoyment out of some of the humor coming from twisting cliches of tokusatsu series and seeing how nutty some of the mundane experiences from these characters can be. However, some bits felt a bit too subdued as I did wish the series could have devoted a bit more focus on Fudo and Desumi's companions as there are moments their relationship focus felt a bit milquetoast and the humor milked from its Super Sentai nods could have been a little more over the top at points. Still in spite of some of my gripes, I don't regret the time I spent watching through this series and think it's worth a look if you want a fun little twist on the typical elements of tokusatsu shows.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:4469#628]
(Two episodes watched):

There's a type of anime that bugs me: shows which have what I call a 'joke premise', which is a strange, amusing premise--but which aren't able to do much with it. It's like they tell a modest joke in episode one, then expect us to keep laughing at it for another dozen or so. The original joke was OK but not great and those in the rest of the episodes aren't even as good as that. Such a show is Love After World Domination. Since the jokes aren't anything special, what is needed is an interesting plot and some decent drama. But these shows typically lack those. The tone here was kind of silly, but it had little more than a children's level plot. there's no way Fudo and Desumi would really be able to keep their romance secret just by pretending to fight whenever anyone looks their way--not unless the other characters are total idiots, which would not be funny at all. I wish at least a half-hearted effort had been made to make this show semi-plausible (there's no way it will ever be fully plausible, given the scenario) and interesting. Why has Desumi joined an evil organization? Will it ever occur to Fudo that this secret romance might not be a good idea? Maybe if I had grown up watching Power Rangers and similar shows this would be more fun, but I doubt it. I watched episode two, in which Fudo and Desumi go on a date of sorts. But my impression was the same: a completely implausible situation, impossible to take seriously, which could only be tolerated if it was uproariously funny, but it wasn't. The jokes seemed very predictable and tired. It just seems like these Joke Premise shows are little more than a continual waste of potentially good ideas, which frustrates me. If you are going to make an anime whose premise has a touch or originality to it, exploit that originality rather than just crank out one more half-assed series.
