When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He's surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

In/Spectre involves two college-aged students with spiritual abilities, Kotoko and Kuro, being tasked to solve mysteries affecting the supernatural to varying degrees as the former's role is to preserve a natural balance between the living and spiritual planes. Whereas many mystery anime involve the major characters discovering clues to determine a suspect and motive for cases, In/Spectre sticks out in that the series resolves its mysteries from Kotoko and Kuro narrowing down potential outcomes based off what one would make the more rational sense or manipulating information to get a desired outcome. The first three episodes of the series are used to introduce our main pair of characters and show how both go about resolving mysteries they will be entangled in, with the remainder of the series devoted to a major mystery that the pair get involved in involving a mysterious spirit wielding a construction steel beam as a weapon. With this focus, the series often resorts to dragged-out conversations with characters sorting out particulars of the mystery that they are involved with and trying to sort out said details. So if you're more a fan of titles that put more focus on more show than tell with their storytelling, this anime may not be your cup of tea in regards to its storytelling.

While largely focused on its mystery solving, In/ Spectre does also devote some time to fleshing out its main pair of characters and dabbling into their relationship. While Kuro doesn't have much to show in terms of personality, the series does explore his family history and how he acquired his abilities with immortality and precognition, and how this affects a relationship he had before the start of the series. Kotoko makes for a rather entertaining character with her feisty personality, aggressive affection toward Kuro, and her strong deductive skills utilized for the mysteries she takes on.

Like many titles based on ongoing manga source material, In/ Spectre does end inconclusively as its main antagonist is still at large at the end of this series. But a second season is currently in the works for it, that may good news to fans looking for more mysteries to see Kuro and Kotoko being involved with. The series may not be everyone's cup of tea in how the series goes about with solving its mysteries, it's still unique enough in its focus for a shounen mystery series that I'd at least recommend watching the series at least once to see if it catches your interest.
