Five years after the 'Global Synchronic Urban Disappearance', a worldwide catastrophe which saw giant craters appear in the midst of numerous major cities, life has pretty much gotten back to normal. The aimless Seria Morino is so thrilled by a movie presented in a 'Super Material Theater' (a theater which employs a cutting edge 3D hologram system) that she vows to become an actress herself. She is recruited by Alice in Theater, a less elaborate establishment which nevertheless employs SMT technology.

12 episodes.

(Two episodes watched):

I had a hard time choosing keywords for this series, because episode one didn't exactly make clear what the premise would be. What is the link between Seria's ambitions as an actress and this Global Synchronic Urban Disappearance? It is only mentioned by a school teacher and an aerial view of the crater that has replaced the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo is shown a couple of times. Unexplained urban disasters are not exactly a novel concept in anime, and given that no explanation is forthcoming one would think that this show will be entirely about Seria's career on stage. The ANN synopsis said that she would "uncover unexpected truths about herself and the world around her", which was news to me (it also said this show is related to an OVA, 'Alice in Deadly School'). Everyone sees unpolished brilliance in Seria's impromptu audition, which seemed unremarkable to me, but perhaps what they really want is some other ability she has. I had been ready to dispense with this series until I read the ANN claim. It had seemed unoriginal and hardly noteworthy to me. I didn't really feel Seria's motivation, either. Perhaps that's because she still seems largely a stranger. Many characters are introduced in episode one but none are seriously developed (which means I'll have a hard time remembering who's who when episode two comes along). Is that gray-haired girl at the theater an android? (it turns out she's a 'Act Doll'). I decided that I would need to watch another episode since the premise had yet to be fully revealed. But episode two didn't change my first impressions much. I don't see where this is going. I was expecting some sort of shocking revelation--a dark secret perhaps--that would instill the plot with some excitement and mystery, but nothing of the sort happened. Maybe such a secret is being hidden too well. And, when the shot of the crater was repeated in the closing credits, I realized that there had been absolutely no mention of the GSUD either. I give up. I frankly don't give a damn what these 'unexpected truths' Seria will discover will be. What seems a quite obvious truth to me is that this show is confusing and boring.
