Kim is living a peaceful life with his father as a farmer on their planet until one day when a runaway spaceship is detected moving at a high speed towards his father’s farm. To rescue his father Kim jumps onboard the ship and manages to land it safely before it crashes. On board the ship he finds a severely Injured lone survivor whom with his dying words begs Kim to take something of his to the Galactic Fleet. He then transfers something that was attached to his arm onto Kim’s arm. The thing was a Lens and its transferring should have been impossible and having it has turned Kim into a Lensman. Other than giving Kim unknown powers it also contains vital information for the victory of the Galactic Fleet over the evil Boskone Empire. Kim must now using the spaceship Britannia bring the Lense to the Galactic Fleet. But this is not an easy task when Lord Helmet of the Boskone Empire is willing to use everything in his power to stop him.

To my understanding, this film is an alternate retelling of a fairly long sci-fi TV series with a similar premise as what this film portrays. It's mostly a pretty by-the-numbers sci-fi anime with an unwilling youth given the power to combat a powerful alien menace threatening humanity and learning more about his destiny against this threat as he furthers his journey, so nothing too compelling on that end. The one memorable point for this film is the rather impressive animation it sports for a 1980s anime film, particularly being one of the earlier anime to employ CG animation during some elaborate animated sequences such as flying along the surface of massive spaceships and being entrapped within a maze of aliens projected as an illusion. Characters are given a good deal of detail in their designs with some diverse alien designs depicted and movement's quite fluid throughout the film's run, especially during its action sequences. It's easily one of the best animated titles I've seen for an anime out of the decade. This could be a treat for retro anime fans just for the action and animation. But beyond that, it offers nothing else that is memorable within the sci-fi genre for anime.
