Set four years before the start of Uchū Kyōdai, this prequel is meant to explore phases of Hibito and Mutta's work careers with the former undergoing training through NASA and the latter attempting to deal with work problems when he's reassigned to work at a rural car dealership with the staff lacking any motivation to do anything. Hibito's plot gets some decent exploration delving into the bond he establishes with veteran astronaut Brian Jay. But Mutta's plot did feel kind of shafted in points of its developments, which probably has to do with the film's uneven pacing with attempting to focus on plot developments with both its lead characters. The film probably could have used either a longer running time or been made into a 5 or 6 episode long OVA series for focus on both characters to feel more evenly laid out. As it is, the film's an okay look at Mutta and Hibito's past years before the TV anime's start, but its pacing does hinder equal focus on both characters.
