Ore wo Suki na no wa Omae Dake ka yo
(One episode watched):
Around halfway through episode one of Ore, the thought occurred to me 'Is this going anywhere?'. I couldn't recall a single serious laugh, and maybe not even a smile up til that point. I had been modestly curious what the basic premise of this show would be, and as the pieces came together it wasn't looking all that brilliant. Joro has been employing a romantic strategy of pretending to be a sweet, naive, 'obtuse' boy (even though his heart is not as pure as it may seem) in hopes that certain girls will find that attractive and confess to him. But it becomes clear that the only girl who takes any interest in him is a creepy one, Himawari, who has been stalking him. Somehow she has figured out exactly what his true personality looks like, and she finds it intriguing. In fact, it gets to the point of her theorizing that he has two personalities altogether, like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. That was a bit of a stretch; how would she know about Joro's 'Hyde' side? He doesn't say these things out loud, and it isn't all that pronounced--everybody has dirty secrets. I don't hate Joro, but I don't really care one way or the other about him or anybody else. Every hint I get suggests this show will be relying on weak jokes and fanservice rather than plot or character. So, the show isn't all that funny and the characters are superficial, which means it will be hard to care what becomes of them in the end. I can see how with some more skill this premise might have been made to be intriguing, but that does not seem to be what actually happened and I think I will pass.
