A friend's offhand remark alerts Hibiki Sakura, an avid eater of snacks and fast food, to the fact that she is gaining weight and becoming less attractive. When she finds that she lacks the willpower to exercise and diet on her own, she pays a free visit to the recently opened Silverman Gym. This turns out to be an outfit which handles professional athletes of Herculean strength, and Hibiki soon feels completely out of her league. She is persuaded to stay by the presence of her school's student council president--and the fact that she takes a liking to Machio, her trainer.

It's hard to review comedies, because they often don't have much of a story to them and about the only question is whether they were funny or not. Dumbbell had some decent laughs and an amusing premise, though it did not seem funny enough to be worth watching unless it turns out to have some sort of fairly interesting plot as well. Stuff like Akemi having a 'muscle fetish' which causes her to have an orgasm-like experience while watching ripped men will only be funny a couple of times, not a dozen or more. It looks like with time a number of additional girls, each, I'm guessing, with her own bizarre idiosyncrasy, will join her and Hibiki. The viewer learns a bit about how various exercises are performed and how exercise equipment is used safely; I wonder if some Japanese health ministry didn't underwrite part of this show. Indeed, during episode two I got the impression that this show might be more about education than comedy; a sort of 'infotainment', you might say. Episodes three and four were OK--not boring, but not brilliant either. The jokes were modest at best; they never truly surprised me and made me LOL. While things happen--a trip to the beach, an athletic competition at school--I didn't detect much of an ongoing plot to the story; there's no goal that the main character is struggling to attain, other than the vague one of looking good. Or maybe I should say there's no reason to doubt that she will achieve her goal sooner or later, which isn't exactly exciting. After awhile the novelty of this anime wore off and since there wasn't much of a plot or all that many laughs I decided to drop it.
