The long running and popular MMORPG, 'Infinity Game' is about to shut down once and for all. Akira Oono, an employee at the company that designed and maintained the game, watches the last few seconds of the 15 year run wind down. But just when everything should shut down he instead finds himself whisked away into the sword and sorcery world of the game, in the persona of his game character Demon Lord Hakuto Kunai.

The premise of this show does not exactly score points for originality; the 'man transported into shut down game' concept obviously came from Overlord and the downtrodden little girl he befriends arguably came from Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari . Nor is this the first show to have a human acting as a 'Demon Lord' as the main character. Still, such a premise could go in a million different directions and I was left fairly curious about where this one would head. Kunai grows some personality as he talks to himself and to the girl Aku (who has one red and one green eye for some reason), and she is likeable too. One thing Kunai does not do is become significantly frazzled or disturbed by his inexplicable experience, which suggests that this show has no intention of becoming psychologically deep. The show does joke a little about the plethora of Isekai anime that are available nowadays, and in exchange I was prepared to let it be somewhat imitative. I doubt if this series will be brilliant; maybe it will never get particularly sophisticated. Maybe this is just an attempt to cobble together a so-so story in a hurry by cutting and pasting elements of other successful shows. But who knows?

Episode two wasn't exactly fantastic. I don't recall being genuinely surprised by anything that happened. It was a modest plot telling a modest story without trying to stretch envelopes or do anything particularly risky or daring. It wasn't bad but it wasn't exactly good either. I had forgotten that Kunai originated here on earth, and the episode didn't do much of anything that would have reminded me. I wonder if there was any point in including his origins at all. Would the jokes have been any funnier if I had remembered that this is actually a real-world guy? They were amusing but not LOL funny, and that bit of info wouldn't have revolutionized them. Basically, Retry was just a step or two ahead of being boring. What occurred to me during episode three was that not just the plot but also this show's animation is rather simple. Another powerful and arrogant female sorcerer comes along, and finds herself nowhere near as powerful as Kunai. Again, modestly amusing but fairly predictable and not exactly exciting. I had assumed that this show would be largely about how Aku and Akira/Kunai got along, but their relationship has actually gotten relatively little attention as additional characters are introduced instead and he attracts a harem to himself. As far as characters go, it seems more concerned with quantity than quality. I decided that while this show might be adequate, it was definitely not going to be exceptional and quit watching.
