This movie appears to have been made in response to the Baldios TV anime lacking a proper ending, as it was abruptly cancelled due to low viewer ratings in a similar vain as the Ideon TV anime. A good chunk of the movie appears to have be reused footage from the TV anime, which is quite noticeable at points in much of the film's first half with abrupt transition of storytelling and animation clips. The second half is mostly focused on wrapping up the anime in depicting the events that didn't play out in the TV anime and appears to have the intended bittersweet ending with how things unfold in the conflict between Earth and S-1. I've yet to see the Baldios TV anime as it looks to have quite the downbeat tone compared to many mecha titles of the era with many of the events that unfolded, that was perhaps better explored with the TV anime's longer runtime and slower pacing. It looks interesting enough where I may be tempted to track down the TV anime at some point. But as is, the film mostly exists to provide a conclusion to the TV anime that fans wanted and is only worth tracking down if you have seen all of Baldios (instead of just watching it with no familiarity as I did).
