Largely a slice-of-life comedy involving Akari's bond with the titular vampire Sophie, this series has their character dynamics being Sophie the "straight man" with behavior not found of the typical assumptions about vampires and Sophie being the "nutty one" of the duo with her interest in Sophie bordering on romantic and admiring the girl's looks due to her resemblance to the porcelain dolls Akari has interest in. Another vampire and a few of Akari's classmates also make their presence felt throughout the series as they learn of Akari and Sophie's new friendship and learn more about Sophie's habits. Like many slice of life shows, humor for the series comes from the personality quirks of the characters and occasional bizarre situations that come up, as well as the gradual developments that characters undergo. Like many slice of life titles of its ilk, your mileage may vary with what interest you have in it, though the vampire element does add some uniqueness to it.

A vampire with a laptop computer--Sophie is a throughly modern vampire ("As a nocturnal person, I can't help watching late night anime"). She gets the blood she needs in a non-violent manner. This seemed like a fairly silly and fun show, no doubt based on lots of 4-koma cartoons. The jokes were modestly amusing, though I wondered if there are enough preconceptions about vampires waiting to be broken in order to keep it going for twelve episodes or so. Initially, Sophie would rather be left alone, but Akari basically moves in with her and with time Sophie realizes that having a friend has advantages. So, if I'm not imagining things, the characters have some feelings and don't just crack jokes incessantly. Still, the story isn't exactly moving; it is primarily about simple jokes, not friendship or learning lessons or anything like that. Over time the freshness of the situation wore off and I became tired. Like newspaper cartoons, the jokes are generally smile-funny rather than LOL-funny and not much of an interesting plot was coming together. So, when it came time to watch episode five, I instead decided to drop this show and move on. Last updated Saturday, April 06 2019. Created Monday, October 22 2018. |
