Though he doesn't look much like the stereotypical sumo wrestler, Ushio Hinomaru is a fanatic regarding the sport and has come to a new school which is supposed to have a professional and disciplined sumo club. What he finds is somewhat different than what he was expecting, however. The situation demands a change of plans, and he resolves to turn things around by sheer force of will.

(Three episodes watched):

I was skeptical, to say the least, of an anime about sumo wrestling, but episode one seemed like a fun show which I wouldn't mind watching. The characters have, well, character, and the jokes were not bad either. Ushio convinces us that his dream of creating a functioning--nay, championship grade, sumo team is a worthwhile goal and one which might just be attainable. It looks like he will recruit guys who were little more than delinquents when he arrived (at the wrong school) and turn them into champions. The friend he made, and the way he unwittingly persuaded Ushio to transfer to this third-rate high school, was neat. It seems that girls at the school will play a part in the story as well. With a hero we can believe in and some decent laughs, the fact that sumo wrestling isn't exactly the most exciting sport I can think of might not be a problem. But in succeeding episodes, after the initial 'buzz' wore off, the show became more formulaic and predictable. It seems like the usual 'let's start from nothing and win a championship' theme, with the usual mysterious but highly capable manager appearing as a gift from heaven and whatnot. And the humor largely evaporated. During the matches during episode three it was virtually impossible to figure out what tactics the wrestlers were using (despite their fancy names) and why they succeeded or failed. The animation isn't fluid enough to capture stuff like where you grab your opponent, how you apply leverage, etc. As a result of all these things, I decided to drop this show. It got off to a good start, but didn't seem to be capable of maintaining the momentum. When I learned later on that it is no less than 24 episodes long, I was reassured that I had made the right call.
