(Two episodes watched):

There's definitely something funny going on at this bookstore, but it's more 'funny' in the sense of being odd than in the sense that it makes me laugh. The basic joke is that people are so obsessed with their manga that they don't notice that Honda is a skeleton or that every other employee wears a mask of some sort. No attempt whatsoever is made to explain why the store has such curious staff members. What we get are basically mildly crazy customers and an employee whose mind is quite ordinary but whose body is definitely not. This paradox is good for a single joke, but I don't know if basing the entire premise of the series on it was a good idea. I thought that maybe the explanation was being saved for episode two, but again we are apparently just supposed to accept this bizarre situation without asking questions. Maybe there never will be any explanation. Since the jokes themselves were not uproariously funny, I found myself wondering far more what the deal was with the staff than laughing. The store seems to get a lot of foreign customers, which was sort of interesting, and the otaku angle is always interesting to me as well. But I couldn't help wondering if this show would be worth watching. Episode two teaches us a good deal about how a Japanese book store is run, but that isn't exactly exciting or interesting and other than that it seemed almost painfully boring. Indeed, at times I wondered if the jokes being told were really meant to be jokes at all, because they fell so flat. I think I got a total of one smirk out of episode two; I got more satisfaction from learning about bookstore management than from the humor. I think I have seen enough of Gaikotsu.
