Must admit that it's much harder for me to knock on this movie compared to other installments of the Ah My Goddess franchise I've watched through thus far. The main conflict for this movie helps provide Keiichi and Belldandy a good deal more dimension compared to other anime adaptations of the series I've seen thus far, thus they're actually easier to connect with here in response to the events of the film's main conflict. Said conflict involves an old mentor of Belldandy's seeking to overthrow the Goddess System to allow humanity the opportunity to gain eternal happiness using Belldandy as a means to pull it off. The conflict leads to a test of Belldandy and Keiichi's relationship as not only is Celestin revealed to be a former love interest to Belldandy, but also his tampering with Belldandy leads her to lose all memories she had living with Keiichi. The motives that Celestin has with his plan are sympathetic if thought about, though it's nothing different from what other anime titles have with the motives of any villains have grand-scale plans of some sort. In addition, the animation to this is gorgeous compared to its earlier OVA adaptation, being on par with its later 2000s TV anime and sporting some elaborate and excellent animated sequences that include motorcycling from Keiichi's motorcycle club and some of the later battles between goddesses. Overall, this is easily the best title within the Ah My Goddess franchise I've seen thus far, in spite of it only having an anime-original plot.

I'll review this movie based on the rate categories above.

First, the art is done beautifully. Actually, that's an understatement. The city, the people, Heaven, and of course the motors, everything are all put into consideration. I mean, even the tiniest detail are drawn so as to retain the reality in the movie.

The animation is amazing. The CG's were generated in all the right places, the movement of the elements of the movie are just, as I've said before, amazing.

The characters are an improvement of those in OAV's, just as Fujishima's art are becoming one of the best in the world. The goddesses' faces were given beauty a goddess deserves. Even Keiichi's face were more matured, sign that the story is consistent and continuous.

As for the music, let's just say that Shirou Hamaguchi is now my most favorite composer in the world, in line with John Williams and John Barry. The music's so great, I've downloaded them all (of course, I wanted to buy the original). It suits the movie very well.

The story, I suppose, has a great plot, with no loose ends. I've watched this movie like 20 times and I'm still not sick of it.

Overall, this is one of the greatest anime movie out there, and should be considered a classic.

The first thing I'd like to point out is that this is not a Manga. As someone below had critized this movie on what appears to a comparison to the Manga counterpart. For some odd reason, some people like to judge and rate an anime, OVA or anime movie by it's original Manga version. That's extremely folly. That's like trying to say that apples aren't good for you because they don't provide the same amount of vitamins as an orange. If anything, an anime can be looked at maybe as a "suppliment" to the orange... errm, manga. But not a means to grade the anime because the manga happens to have a few extra words (being facetious). Now we got our fruit education out of the way, here's the rest of my review....

Art, Animation & Character Designs
The art was exceptional. As expected of a movie adaptation. The artwork had rich vibrant colors with plenty of details in both the background and foreground. Character designs were well done as well and retained the same look and feel to that of the series. If anything, they were a bit more detailed with richer colors and finer artwork. Animation was really smooth and made everything look velvety smooth.

Music
The music had a lot of orchestra-style music with plenty of instruments. It wasn't too bad.

Series and Episode Story
Having thoroughly enjoyed the series (original), I didn't have a doubt I'd enjoy this one. As I thought, it turned out really good... if not better than what I had expected. The characters were all well developed. The plot was pretty good, even if it was predictable. By the end, it was well done and wrapped up nicely.

Overall, it had near perfect mix of elements and the plot worked well.

In my opinion, the writers did not do their work in this movie. Oh! My Goddess series has been criticized as boy's romantic fantasy, and there I suspect the reason for its popularity, but this movie is worse than the Manga series, which I have somewhat enjoyed. Character voices lack the range of emotions that could have been possible, for the dialog is too simple and sounds as if something recycled from the manga series. The plot, especially behavior of Celestin just doesn't make much sense, and what Morgan hoped to achieve or how she knew about Celestin did not get established at all. Most of the scenes were used in fancy looking visual scene, which may be what people wanted, but lacks originality.

Oh! My Goddess as a manga series has evolved since its creation. In beginning, the character design was rather crude and the story was more about a ordinary boy somewhat comically becoming the center of attention to multitudes of fine ladies. As the series went on, the drawing got better and the author was better able to convey the inner struggle, trust, and somewhat divine serenity between Keiichi and Belldandy. That trust and serenity was what distinguished this series, but was not well expressed in the movie. Manga usually succeeds in this by its unique and original dialog or monologue, but as I have said before, this movie just doesn't feel original; feels more like sequel using old formulas to squeeze more money from the whole franchise.

Its Music was much below par. If the best singer among the goddess is singing, we should expect more variety and technique, not just simple vocalise befitting of beginning singer. I have recordings of some boy soprano( Trebles ) solos, probably of age less than 10, who can sing much. much better with more dynamic, range, and technique. ( For those who have knowledge of classical music, check out some of the recordings of Haydn's mass where they use boy soprano solos. These boys sing much, much better than the choir you hear in Lord of Rings Movie ). Heck, I personally know at least five female singers that can do better than that here in Lafayette, Indiana, home of Purdue University which does NOT even offer Bachelor's degree in Music. Choir of Angels felt like let down; I have conducted choirs made entirely of non-music majors which sings better than that. Worst of all, the producer chose not to use music in places that could have benefitted and stuck with battle music for most of places, where a different mood may heighten the sense of irony and intensity.

The motif of door of judgement was not properly explored as well, as this is a typical literary tool to bring about a conclusion between people's relationship. I fully know about the trust between them, but the thing about judgement is that even an expected outcomes actually causes changes. There is no way that they could just simply end and go back to how things were before the incidence.

Unlike AstroNerdBoy I don't think this movie works half as well without knowing either the Manga or the OAV. But if you've seen the OAV (like I did right before watching this movie for the first time) then be prepared - for a positive surprise.

Besides the wonderful animation and the beautiful music, what works best in this movie are the characters. None of them silly (perhaps except the motor club leaders...); many have significantly improved as compared to the OVA: Belldandy is really powerful, and especially Urd and Skuld are much more influential (and reasonable) this time (they were more like a nuisance in the OAV). I consider Keiichi a little weaker, he's neither really funny nor really adult now (he simply looks older). But the new characters, Morgan and Celestin (none of which ever appeared in the Manga at all!), are strong as well and not too one-dimensional - they give life to the story.
The story works (unlike in the way too short OVA), and the development is interesting for at least two thirds of the show. Even the atmosphere works well, using an odd mixture of heavenly powers and hacker-slang... I like this element as well (and the virus attack reminded me of a certain episode in Shin Seiki Evangelion...).

If there's any real downside about this movie then it must be the way too obvious ending, and the somehow too simplistic message, both leading to a heavy downgrade for "Series Story". Even so, Morgan's decision to stay at the gate is a nice round-up of the whole story, and this movie left me with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

One of the best anime movies I own. The story line is based around romance, and vengence. Beldanddy a Unlimited third class good is now in a relationship with a human named keiichi. well all are ging okay up to a point where beldandy's old mentor, Celestine comes back. He was put in prison for trying to overthrow heaven due to what he found as "cruel, and tribital" practices. He is mad at the heavens for using the "love gate" which is a think that tests out the commitment between two diffrent beings, and Keiichi for getting his one love Belldandy. Not gonna ruin it for you. Just have to say this is a keeper

Lets be blunt. the oav never was that great. the movie on the other hand, is WONDERFUL. This anime is one of Pioneer LDC's best works. It is well done, with very good orchestrated music, storyline, and the characters have somewhat better personality than the 5 part series.
If it is one thing I will always remember it is the orchestra music that kept the mood throughout the whole movie. Belldandi (or belldandy, whatever) of course has the darn cutest voice ever. Argh, i can never get enough of her japanese voice, it is too kawaii :)

First, let me say that while you don't have to have seen the Oh My Goddess OAV's or manga to enjoy this movie, it does help a great deal to know the characters and what things are.

In brief, Belldandy's former mentor Celestine has been freed from his prison by a bitter fairy princess. Celestin wants to remake the universe in his image. To do this, he blocks Belldandy's memory of her life with Keiichi and infects goddess system with a virus. Now it is a race against the clock to stop his plan.

There are lots of cameos from the manga including people in the motor club, the 4th goddess Peorth, the first president of the motor club (who runs a bike shop), Keiichi's sister, and a few more. No cameos from others like Mara or Sayoko but that's OK.

Storywise, this is a well written story. Belldandy shows that she is even more powerful than ever seen before. The relationship between Keiichi and Belldandy is put to the test. And having Urd, Skuld, Belldandy, and their angels sing at the end was just awesome and beautiful! It was very moving. That scene alone makes this rental-worthy!

Bottom line: OMG fans, this is a must have.

This movie not only includes romance, but also actions. The movie provides a nice background to Belle's past and the operations in the "haven", which is not present in the OAV. I would say that this movie would make more sense if you have read the comics. However, it is a nice addition to your AMG series.

The feature length Ah! My Goddess movie is a mixed bag as far as content and animation go.
Picking up 3 years after the OAVs, Keiichi and Belldandy have a more solid relationship than ever before. The two young lovers are so sweet my teeth began to rot (I mean that in a good way.) So attuned to one another are they that they are an unbeatable team in the motor sports club.
Then along comes Celestian, Belldandy's mentor and infects her with a virus, using her access codes to hack into Heaven's computer system. His reasoning? The gods are elitist dictators who want to maintain their superior status quo. This sort of proletariat thinking really made me sympathize with him, and I was actually disappointed when he lost, since Belldandy's defence, bless her heart, made little sense and reflected a naive trust in the benevolence and judgement of authority. Plotholes like these (Belle's utter lack of a convincing arguement is key) led up to the weak and predictable conclusion, which spoiled an intriguing movie up to that point. So alas, I must bump it down to a rent.
Still, the romance between Belle and Keiichi warmed my cold, cold heart and even though I knew it was coming, when they passed thru the Gate of Judgement successfully I felt very rewarded. On a personal note, it was nice to see Urd actually being competant, as I've always liked her character and felt she was under-used or simply used for comedic screw-ups.
Technically, the film varies. Some VERY nice moto-race sequences average out some inexcusably poor character animation (the budget was obviously squandered on laughably dated CG sequences.) Animation this poor would be expected on a TV show, but for a feature I expect better.
Pioneer's new dub cast was comfortably similar to the OAV's so the change of cast was not distracting, and some nice extras, including an episode of the inane Mini-Goddess series are included on the DVD to spice up the deal.
The new character designs are good. Keiichi looks older and the goddesses all look pretty much the same.
Overall, the Movie gets a rent because of comparatively poor animation for a feature and a poor conclusion to the Celestian conflict. However, Belle and Keiichi's adorable romance make it worth renting, and overall this is a worthwhile addition to the Oh My Goddess series.

Let me start by saying that before seeing this movie I had only read one random chapter from somewhere in the middle of the manga and only watched 2 episodes of the series. On top of that the first time I saw this movie was raw (no subtitles, no dub, nothing) at Sakura-con the year it came out, despite all this it is one of my absolute favorite movies. When I finally got around to buying it I watched it everyday for a week.
Granted, I had some background knowledge on the characters and story but that knowledge was limited, still I understood what was going on and was able to follow and enjoy the story for the most part. I could have given the story a ten but I think it's a little complicated because many things that happen in the beginning arn't explained until much later on.
The animation is some of the best I've seen and the characters are beautiful. There are several new characters and several old characters who are animated for the first time in this movie. Every character is drawn true to their originals with very little detail being lost, which were beautiful to begin with.
I really enjoyed the music, there is one song towards the end sung by the goddesses that is quite beautiful.
Romance, action, humor, motor sports...it's got it all. This is an enjoyable, fun movie whether or not you are an Ah! My Goddess fan.

This rocks!!! The animation stands well enough on its own. Combine the already likable cast, a better story and some action and you have all the makings. Guys and girls should enjoy this. There are many aspects that would appeal to someone, reguardless of gender.
To me, this is the reason the OVA was made. I haven't read any of the mangas, but i'd like to get my hands on a few.
SEE THIS! There is no reason not to. I feel that there is a lacking of solid anime movies, this is an exception. Watch the OVA before watching this! You should have a decent background of the characters so the story impacts you deeper.

TOTAL GRADE: 90% A-
Let me start out by openly stating Ive only read very little of the manga and since only half of the OAV series, so take that in account while reading my review.
I like a lot about this movieoodles Ill dare say. The animation was top-notch, making this one of the most superb animated movies Ive seen in a long while and the special effects were impressive and the look of the characters was very elegant and compimenting. The plot was very interesting and I found myself sympathetic with the motivation of Celestin (Though I cant necessarily condone his methods) but the amnesia subplot of the story gave something of a cliched Ive seen this before feel.
At times, the characters seemed to lack personality almost, as I remember Keichii being a little more lively as he seemed almost sedated for the better part of the movie. My impression is AH, MY GODDESS THE MOVIE was designed under the assumption that you know something about the series and the characters going in as there is very little effort made to explain all the relationships between the characters or outline their basic personalities. Also, Ill admit I was a little confused by the Heaven Control Center and got the idea that I was supposed to know what was going on and there was no intention of explaining much of it too me if I didnt. Needless to say, for those completely ignorant of the series, youre going to miss a lot of background since the film itself is supposed to take place 3 years after the beginning of the series.
With that said, I still liked the movie a lot. Its a sweet story with a little action, a little romance, and a philosophical message interwoven in. I think of this movie as something of a present for fans of the series which is entertaining to a general audience but best appreciated by those who already have an idea about whats going on. If you're a fan of the series, I'd recommend this as a BUY otherwise, you may want to rent it to be sure you like it.

All I can say is "Wow!" I think the movie is in many ways even better than the OAV series. It's much more dramatic and complex than the OAVs were. We finally get a good look at "the heavens" where the goddesses live, and fans of the manga will be pleased to see Peorth. (If there's another movie, will they pleeeeease animate Mara next?) This is one of the few animes that has actually made me cry. The only small complaint I have is that the plot was occasionally hard to follow; I didn't get everything about Celestin's motivations or even exactly what happened at all points during the climactic sequence. However, I'm looking forward to watching this movie several more times to figure it out. Highly recommended!

The movie to me was really the climax for the story, and totally took away my "thats it" feeling I had at the end of the first series. I hope they have more, but even if they don't this movie completes things SO much more! I would definitely buy the movie along with the rest of the show!

The Goddess cast is back for a continuation in the ever popular Ah! My Goddess series. But is it good? You bet it is!
This time around, a mentor of Belldandy from heaven, Celestin, comes to Earth to use Belldandy to overthrow the Goddess System, but will he succeed or will Belldandy's love prevail and prevent an overthrow?
Within the movie, we get to see a little into Belldandy's past in Heaven from her growing up; something we didn't see in the OAV's. We also finally get to see an animated version of Peorth, who wasn't in the OAV's, but in the manga series.
The backgrounds and animation is absolutely jaw-dropping in this movie. I knew it had to look nice, but this was even beyond my assumptions. While for the most part, the Goddess's look the same as they did in the OAV's, just a little cleaned up; Keiichi does have a notable difference in design, but nothing too distracting. If you ask me, he looks better.
I personally enjoyed the orchastrated soundtrack to the movie. Any other type of music would have seemed rather out of place.
Unfortunetely, Pioneer didn't use the Coastal Carolina studio for the dubbing of this feature, but the cast they chose from their usual Animaze cast is very good and a worthy replacement in my mind.
If you're a fan or newcomer to Ah! My Goddess, definitely check this out! Ah! My Goddess hasn't been called a romantic drama for no reason and this movie will not disappoint if that's what you are looking for.
