While I get this series was supposed to be some sort of parody of the magical girl genre's various cliches, the humor largely came off as flat for me and it felt like the series quickly lost steam by rehashing a number of its jokes to varying degrees. Seeing the female leads as cross-gender and muscular men in their "magical girl" forms can only carry things so far before things feel kind of hollow and not sure I'd be interested in rewatching this again.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3523#628]
(Two episodes watched):

I had mixed feelings about this show after watching episode one. On the one hand, I appreciated the attempt to produce a parody of the stereotypical Magical Girl anime. Saki is not exactly the joyous, pure girl that Idols and Magical Girls are supposed to be. And transforming somehow makes her into a ripped muscleman rather than the demure fighting girl we expect. There were some good jokes, like the 'Rainbow Miracle Super Delicious Pretty Hyper Rainbow Attack' spell. But I wish it had been a little more funny than it was; it seems sort of perched on the line between funny enough and not funny enough to watch just for the jokes. The superdeformity moments could be kind of annoying, too. Stuff like Saki's yakuza-like mascot seem more bizarre than funny. What's more, I'm uncertain if any sort of interesting plot is going to come together. Absurdity alone isn't enough (it isn't even necessarily funny), and so far the show seems to be relying on that. I didn't get much of a sense from the first half of episode two that the gender switching would be anything more than a slightly funny joke that would be repeated numerous times. It's kind of odd that such a potentially scandalous twist (what should a person who suddenly finds themself a member of the opposite sex do?) could be largely left unused. Maybe it will lead to all sorts of embarrassing situations for Saki, but it doesn't look like it will be part of an interesting plot. Since the humor is not LOL funny, I wish the gender swapping would be expanded on and some sort of intriguing conflict, some sort of problem that must be solved, would appear; but again, so far I'm not seeing it. As it is, this show doesn't really seem to be worth the time and trouble that converting it and just plain watching it would demand. The jokes are not all that funny and it doesn't seem to be telling an interesting story.
