Subaru Ichinose is a ace mobile suit pilot aboard the Tiramisu, the most important space battleship of the Earth Union. Because he is uncomfortable with the rowdy behavior of his fellow pilots (and has a curious physical deformity which he wants to keep secret), he is most comfortable in the cockpit of his MS, 'Durandal', which he compares to his mother's womb.

This genuinely LOL funny show seems to be a parody of the generic Gundam-type series. Topics which would never appear in those shows turn up here, for example what would you do if you found yourself in the midst of a deadly space dogfight--but you had accidentally put your shirt on backwards? The good quality, realistic character designs and animation make the show all the more hilarious, sense they give every sign that it will be serious about combat when in fact it is not. I doubt if there will be much of an ongoing plot, but that's OK since the show is worth watching just for the laughs. Stuff like the 'Space Chihuahua' that Subaru adopts contrary to Tiramisu regulations. The episodes of this short often make me laugh more than 23-minute episodes of other anime comedies do. In episode three it wasn't the climactic joke(s) that had me LOLing so much as the point at which an absurd situation was set up--that alone made it obvious that only hilarity could follow. The punch line wasn't critical since the situation itself was hilarious. You don't see that every day in comedy anime (or any other form of humor). The next day after watching episode one I immediately downloaded all additional episodes I could find, which is about the highest recommendation I can give. Definitely a keeper.

As I have said before, I belong to the theory of comedy that things are funny when they make sense, but not in the way you were expecting. A good joke leads you to expect one thing, then delivers something else. That would make sense here; anyone who has watched a fair number of mecha series knows that about the last thing that would ever happen during a mobile suit dogfight is that the hero finds he has put his shirt on backwards. But it could happen; there's no reason why it shouldn't be possible. So it makes some sense even though you definitely weren't expecting it--and therefore it is funny. I must admit that there were some kind of tawdry jokes in episode five which didn't make me laugh a whole lot. But in general the show bends stereotypes into new and hilarious shapes. For instance, Subaru must have an evil opponent who is apparently his equal, right? And such a person is often someone the hero has met before. Yes, but things definitely don't go entirely the way we are expecting in episode seven. This show definitely coaxed more genuine laughter out of me than any other this season. The sassy robot in episode eight was another funny touch. In the end, I was left wondering why shows as funny as this one are so rare in anime.
