The atmosphere in True Cross Academy is lively and boisterous in the days leading up to the grand festival held only once every 11 years. During this time, Okumura Rin is entrusted with the responsibility of suppressing a berserk Phantom Train. In the aftermath of his failed mission, he meets a devil whose appearance is that of a young boy with a mysterious connection to the ongoing festival.

This anime-original plot for this Blue Exorcist movie focuses on Rin and others bonding with a demon who takes on the form of a mischievous young boy linked to an upcoming festival being run within the town he was sealed in. Unlike other movies based on a shounen title that often tend to get too focused on their action, this movie actually takes the time to focus on the demon, Usamaro, as Rin connects with him and Usamaro's naiveté on understanding human emotions being a source of tragic conflict later in the film that actually makes for some engaging plot development. Otherwise, this film retains the TV anime's good-looking visual presentation and in spite of its engaging plot, doesn't really offer much new to the plot of Blue Exorcist as a whole. Still if you were a fan of the TV anime, this film still makes for a decent watch.
