One day, pushing a button on her cell phone somehow transports Yuzuki to an alternate world. It seems like Japan during the Warring States Period, but there are some definite differences--like the factions fighting each other here are vampires and werewolves.

Lately, the concept of 'suspension of disbelief' has come up often as I write anime reviews. Basically, the premise of a show has got to be plausible enough that the viewer accepts that it conceivably could happen, even if the odds are tiny, and therefore he/she can take the show seriously and enjoy it. But when I learned that Sengoku Night Blood was going to be a crossover between Samurai and vampires/werewolves, I almost burst out laughing. I just could not take this show seriously. Perhaps the portrayal of warriors as exponentially cool rock stars/idols with swords also did a lot of harm to my ability to suspend disbelief. I was annoyed that the only purpose of ordinary soldiers seems to be as targets for these awesome dudes to demonstrate how good they are by bringing them down with one slash of the sword. And Yuzuki's response to being transported to an alternate reality was exceedingly unconvincing as well. I quickly decided that the only chance this show had was that if the explanation behind her transport turned out to be intriguing--good enough that I could suspend disbelief regarding it, basically--then maybe I would watch some more. I fast-forwarded to the next scene in which she appeared. But the signs are that the explanation will not be forthcoming any time soon, and that's not good enough. I was left wondering, was there any way such a bizarre premise could have been pitched to us in a manner which we could take seriously? Maybe trying to tackle both Samurai and vampires/werewolves was going too far, and if the first had been dropped the second might have been made to work. Or if the quality of the writing and dialogue had been noteworthy, maybe both could have been kept. But whatever the case may be, Sengoku Night Blood just does not work for me.
