(One episode watched):

First of all, I didn't see this supposed 'menacing' look in Maika's eyes at all, probably because the character designs in this show are pretty simple and all girls basically have the same eyes. It's tricky, if not impossible, to make the protagonist both have a hostile look and be likeable, when the eyes are the telltale giveaway of what sort of personality a simple anime character will have. I must admit that I was kind of amused by the concept of a Café in which customers are intentionally treated badly--and they love it. But while this show has generated a strange situation and pitched it to us, I felt that afterwards not a whole lot of effort was being made to expand on this premise, and that needs to be done in order to maintain my interest. I'm not going to watch twelve episodes or so of mediocre jokes just because they are taking place in a situation that was briefly novel. It will get old quick; indeed, before this first episode was finished I was impatient for more original touches, but there didn't seem to be any more. Another case of a show which was meant to be a comedy, but the jokes alone are not good enough to be worth watching for, so some sort of story is needed to fill the void. I wish I would be told more about how such an establishment might operate--like, how do the operators know which waitress is best suited to a particular customer? I doubt if the question of how Maika feels as she makes a living by exploiting a trait which is supposed to be a weakness, and pandering to masochistic customers, will ever be explored. So, I think I will pass on Blend S. The concept is amusing, but as often happens, I get the feeling that little is going to be done to expand it.
