The Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch side story takes place in 2017 a.t.b., around the time Lelouch took on the alter-ego “Zero” and built up his “Black Knights” rebellion army. The setting is in Europe, where the Euro Universe (E.U.) allied nations are being invaded by the overwhelming forces of the Holy Britannian Empire. On the verge of defeat, the E.U. army forms a special division known as “W-O″, of which a young pilot named Akito Hyuuga is a member. Layla Malkal , a former Britannian Aristocrat comes to the E.U.'s aid, commanding the “Wyvern” Knightmare corps comprised of Japanese teenagers. They recklessly plunge into a battlefield, where the survival rate is extremely low, at about 5% only. They fight for their freedom, and for a "home" to which they can return.

Akito the Exiled appears to serve as a sort of "interquel" between the events of the first and second seasons to Code Geass as it focuses on a group of Japanese pilots fighting on behalf of the Europia United faction against the invading Britannian forces. The plot was a bit muddled at first as it was a bit hard to follow who among each of the new characters represented each faction and to care for, but things gradually become clearer as the series progresses, particularly on the rivalry between main lead Akito fighting for Europia and his brother Shin fighting for the Britannians. The series also sports a more mature mood compared to the two TV seasons as Akito has a more darker and twisted back story than Lelouch, the squad he is part of take on suicide missions, and the tone of the series as a whole is noticeably more serious compared to the two TV anime being more grandiose and over-the-top with their developments. Some of the major Code Geass characters do make cameos or have small roles in this series, most notable of which being Suzaku as he arrives to provide support in Britannia's conflict with the Europia forces. While it's questionable if this series adds anything new to the Code Geass mythos, it still provides solid entertainment with its mecha-action and exploring the tormented character of Akito as he provides support against Britannian forces.
