Amid a supposedly simple escort mission, Joe and his crew experience a failure during their warp travel. They wake up just to find out that the passengers are missing. To make things worse, the United Space Force accuses them of committing space piracy and Crusher HQ suspends their licenses for six months. To clear their names, they head out to the dangerous planet of Lagol to find the person who hired them for that particular mission.

Being one of the earliest films done by Sunrise, Crusher Joe doesn't particularly stick out well as a sci-fi film focusing on Joe and his group of space mercenaries called Crushers getting caught up in a criminal conspiracy in what they thought was a simple escort mission. The characters all fill their specific character types typical of 80s sci-fi titles where there isn't much depth provided to them and the plot is nothing extraordinary either when more about the criminal conspiracy is unveiled. A rather interesting fact about this film is that it is made by the same creator of Dirty Pair; which would eventually surpass this series in popularity, spawn more anime adaptations than Crusher Joe only getting another two-episode OVA series, and the Lovely Angels even make a cameo appearance during a movie theater screening within this movie. Overall, this is yet another forgettable 80s anime romp with nothing that particularly sticks out with it.
