This sequel to the Tylor TV series continues with the anime's plot with UPSF and Raalgon forces in a ceasefire agreement following the events of the TV anime. The OVAs do carry a more serious tone here while retaining the charm and some of the comedy found in the TV anime. So if you're expecting more comedy here, you may be disappointed with these OVAs. These episodes provide some development into some story elements such as Tylor and Yuriko's relationship and the tensions between UPSF and Raalgon forces. The series also sports some episodic stories focusing on Azalyn and some of the Soyokaze crew members that add some fun and nice depth on the characters. The only major issues I have with the OVAs are that while the series does retain its charm and fun cast, half of the episodes in the series are filler that do nothing to advance the plot and the series ends on a cliffhanger just as a new enemy threat makes its presence felt among both Raalgon and UPSF forces. While not as memorable and laugh-out loud funny as the TV series, these OVAs for Tylor are still a solid addition to the series that adds more to it despite being left open-ended.

DramaLow/MedTylor's War was the downer episodes, the rest a upbeat/mild
ComedyLowA BIG change from the TV series, these OVA's are serious
ActionMedSame as the TV Series
SciFiMedActually they got into more techinical during the OVA than the TV series
EcchiNoneI think a pin up of a officer was all they did for the Marine episode
If you are coming from the TV series and expecting a laugh. This is NOT it. This is more Serious. Tylor's war (Episode 1 and 2) are all about Tylor getting a secret mission and actually using his head to solve it instead of his luck. This is a LARGE change because the crew notices this and bad blood develops. This also changes the personalities of people such as Dom and Azalyn. During the whole episode I was like WTF until the very end, then I understood. The next 4 episodes are actually offshoots of Tylor's war. If you miss Tylor's war (as I did because I didn't know about Disc 1) you miss a very important piece of information that they do not reiterate later, especially the significance of Azalyn and Yuriko's episodes. The 3rd disc is the weakest of the whole series. This appears to be an attempt to sell the franchise but as the other episodes were more serious this failed to recapture the 'Tylor' essence. (I assume the prince from the Azalyn episode is behind all of it BTW).

So all in all, it was good to watch, but this is not for the 'Funny Tylor' viewer. Tylor makes some hard (and easy) choices and it will affect EVERYONE.

Avoid Stretch [series:336#628]
When it comes to Anime, one of my cardinal rules is never pay the premium price for anything that I haven't already seen and judged completely worth the money. It was the Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVAs which were largely responsible for getting this rule set in stone. After watching the ICT TV series and being delighted with it, I was only too happy to learn that this sequel OVA series existed, and begged for it as a birthday present. My parents duly bought brand-new copies at full price. And, what was my response once I finally got to watch them? Well, let's just say that nearly four years have passed and half the tapes are still in their shrink wrap! I found the episodes to be appallingly boring and tedious to watch. The thought occurs to me that perhaps part of the disappointment I feel results from the superb original cast being split up and operating individually. When they were together, the effect was greater than the sum of it's parts, as the saying goes. Most reviewers seem quite satisfied with these episodes, and my expectations were quite high, but I will not touch them again.

If you were expecting a "real" continuation of the Irresponsible Captain Tyler series...this is not it. It does get into what happens later, but not in the way I was thinking. It is more focussed on the stories of each character, and what happens to them. Apart from the group we are all used to seeing. It still is very good! Just different, and not at all what was expected.

Ok, the first disk is good though not half of what the TV version was! I was not all that impressed. Though still with the same great cast of voice actors and actress's :D (FREEMAN AND ORTIZ! whom did zil and lina in Slayers. My two fav. VA's) I felt that the characters actually kind of lost a bet of themselves in this one...luckily not Tyler though! The other disk is just side stories, witch some are great and others...well arent so grand. I would have to say that you have to see it if you have seen the TV, if nothing more then to see more of that crazy captain and the crew that never realize what they have until it is almost too late!

For those of us that loved the tv series and waited with anticipation for this release this was far from meeting those expectations the OAV's are disjointed and rushed at best. there are a few redeaming episodes that are very good The Sameri's narow escape was very enjoyable (Although if I was macross plus I might consider litigation) as a rule this series is wanting deperatly watch if you get a chance but don't go out of you way for these
