It's 1814 and the city of Edo is one of the most populated homes of peasants, samurai, townsmen, merchants, nobles, artists, courtesans, and maybe even supernatural beings. Two residents are the highly accomplished artist Tetsuzo and his talented 23-year-old daughter O-Ei. Tetsuo gains worldwide acclaim as Katsushika Hokusai, but few would know "Miss Hokusai," the daughter who assisted him uncredited.

Miss Hokusai depicts a series of fragmented stories revolving around O-Ei, the daughter of a popular painter living in 1814 Edo, and a number of her father's fellow painters. The stories mix focus around O-Ei interacting with family members and her father's fellow painters, interactions with the supernatural, and assisting her father with his painting projects. The storytelling approach won't be for everyone since it doesn't follow a concise narrative, but it allows viewers the opportunity to learn of different aspects of O-Ei's character as she is entangled with painting and her family. The visuals to the film are a little below par for a film where while it believably depicts the settings and dress of Tokugawa-era Edo, it lacks the rich detail and immersive animation typically found with many anime films. Also, the soundtrack's moments of utilizing more modern tracks, such as rock guitar rifts, mesh badly with the film's intended historic setting and usually can be a mood killer for some serious moments. While certainly not for everyone and having some hiccups with its presentation, Miss Hokusai is still a worthwhile historical-piece anime film offering a solid look into O-Ei's unique life within the Tokugawa era.
