(One episode watched):

I watched the first episodes of two new anime last night, and both had several things in common: I knew nothing about either one except its title, and both turned out to be comedies. Henkei Shoujo turned out to be a mere one minute long, while Hinako Note was the usual 23 minutes or so. And Henkei Shoujo made me laugh more than Hinako Note did. There's lots of superdeformity in HN, it's just not very funny, and comedy is obviously what it's trying to do. Why, for instance, is a girl who is always hungry funny? Or one who likes to dress as a maid? Is cuteness rather than actual comedy the idea here? This wouldn't be a bad show if only virtually all of the jokes didn't fall flat. I became so bored that struggling through one complete episode was a major chore. I don't get any sense of there being any longterm plot--like, how will Hinako pursue her goal of becoming an actress after her initial setback? There are some things to like about this show, but no plot and no laughs equals me not watching.
