With Japan's government paralysed by corruption and incompetence, just when the people need help the most, the idea emerges that perhaps what's needed are for inspirational Idol singers to run for office. Little known local performer Natsuki Hoshina is drafted to run for office, and paired with well-known Idol/politician Shizuka Onimaru as her mentor.

(Two episodes watched):

The premise of 'Idol Dietwomen' (female members of parliament) made me snicker at the beginning of this show. I had expected another generic Idol show rather than a parody of Japanese politics. The problem was, even with the amusing premise another generic Idol show was basically what I got. This is looking like another show which has an odd premise with plenty of potential, but doesn't do much with it. The show has a funny premise but the way it is handled afterwards is pretty ordinary and unremarkable; the usual 'girl gets a chance at stardom, and by pluck and willpower struggles to success' theme. It's like the bizarre premise was played as a joke, then immediately forgotten so that it wouldn't get in the way of the usual story. A very serious problem is that the remainder of the show was not very funny either. How will a fun show come about if there are few good jokes? Still, Natsuki has gotten elected to the Diet at the end of the episode, and I was curious what she would do there. About the only hope I could see for this show was if an ambitious story of Natsuki striving to fix problems came about, not just each episode leading up to an animated Idol song and dance act. But I bet the latter would be what we would get.

It's not a good sign when the villain is given glassy, soul-less black eyes; it implies that the makers of the show feel that viewers have such low standards for the entertainment they watch that simplistic, unambitious plots with two-dimensional characters will be perfectly adequate and no risks are being taken to create a noteworthy show. That was the impression I got from episode two. it looks like the plots of episodes will be about as sophisticated as those in children's books, even though the premise involved the complicated business of running a country. In order to be truly funny and/or interesting, the business of politics will need to be taken fairly seriously, but I wasn't seeing any signs of that. So I quit Idol Jihen.
