Yoshio Kobayashi is despondent, because some sort of mysterious field that eminates from him harms anyone and anything that comes nearby, and effectively makes him immortal. But he fervently hates this situation and would rather be dead than endure it. Kensuke Hanazaki, a member of the mysterious Boy's Detective Club, comes across him and has an idea: this effect might be useful to his outfit, so why not recruit Yoshio?

So I guess from what I follow, this anime is attempting its own creative spin on characters coming from famous Japanese author Ranpo Edogawa involving detective Kogoro Akechi and the criminal, Fiend with Twenty Faces. I'll be the first to admit I'm not too familiar with Edogawa's work, so I barely know anything on the matter to have an opinion of how this anime handles elements of the author's characters and literary works. But as far as handling of storytelling and characters go, quite a bit leaves much to be desired. While the series does take time to flesh out its characters and explore the mystery surrounding Akechi and Twenty Faces' past ties together that offers some intriguing elements to their rivalry, the storytelling has its rough spots with a number of its major developments and a number of the characters can often come off as unlikeable in their interactions with one another. Maybe down the line I may try dabbling into Ranpo Edogawa's work as I've heard of his dabbling into mystery being among the most famous among Japanese authors. But as far as what Trickster has to offer, it comes off a bit too hit-or-miss for me to want to consider dabbling more into anytime soon if ever.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3279#628]
(One episode watched):

I noticed the credit for the Peach Pit manga outfit in the opening credits of Trickster, and that encouraged me since I recall PP has been behind several fun anime. But this show was confusing; I recall that while this 'Boy's Detective Club' group was mentioned once or twice, no explanation was offered as to what it was or what it did. Even more annoying was the 'aren't we incredibly cool?' attitude which the show seemed to take. This club is painted as a stylish, awesome, beyond parallels outfit--but coolness has to be earned, you can't just declare yourself to be cool and expect everybody to accept it. We have seen units like this so many times before that yet another one seems more boring than cool. Perhaps the critical mistake was that nobody really got much character development. At the end of the episode we still know little about Yoshio except that he has this bizarre force-field around him, which is something that was revealed way back at the very beginning. We know more about the gadgets that the BDC uses than we do about it's members at the end. As a result, I could never become really engaged with this show and wasn't left particularly curious about what the deal was with Yoshio or who this criminal guy, 'twenty-face', that was being pursued was. And seeing that this series will be a full 24 episodes long only reinforces my decision to pass. If I'm having a hard time understanding what's going on in episode one, I definitely don't want to have to endure that confusion for two full seasons.
