Continuing where its first season left off, Sound Euphonium continues exploring the character chemistry and developments among the members of Kitauji High School's band club as they advance in the national competition. The season offers up some advancements in the character relationships of the series and some further exploration of some key characters that include Asuka's motives for taking part in the band club and Reina's crush on the band club instructor. The great quality animation employed by KyoAni from Sound Euphonium's first season is retained here, along with the great instrumental scores offered up by the band performances. If you enjoyed the first season of this slice-of-life musical drama, you are likely to get as much enjoyment out of this latest offering.

(All episodes watched): Episode one is twice as long as most. I found that I had forgotten far too much about the large cast of characters whose designs could be more distinctive. But even if there hadn't been a long break between the last season and this one, I'd probably be clueless. Maybe I ought to rewatch the entire series up to this point before watching this one. I hope I'll at least understand enough about the principal characters to keep track of what's going on and what really matters. At the end of the almost hour long first episode I did feel a sense of affinity with Kumiko and her closest friends. It seemed sweet and moving--a pleasant story about likeable characters with a goal that they are determined to achieve and which you can root for. In other words, the overall quality seems the same as before. Perhaps what I need is to find a website which would refresh my memory about who's who and what their principal concerns are--I bet such a site really does exist somewhere. This is a very slice-of-life show, in the sense that nothing happens which couldn't happen to an average person (at least if they were in a band which is fated to win a major title). The lives of the characters in their very limited free time is sometimes more interesting that during their endless practice sessions and competitions. It's a credit to this show that it manages to develop the characters enough and be imaginative enough with the plot to make their very believable lives intriguing nevertheless. With time, I regained enough of a grip of who's who and what was going on at the end of the original series to enjoy the show. Curiously, main character Kumiko lives a relatively boring life compared to a number of her fellow band members. She has no immediate problems, instead trouble between her sister and parents are her biggest worry. To be honest, I couldn't think of much to say about the second season of Hibike which I hadn't already said about the first. The climax ends in a somewhat surprising way, but not too surprising considering how realistic and believable this series has been. Let's just say that not everyone can be the champion. One character does something daring which (sort of) resolves the problem that she has been struggling with since the beginning. At least it presumably won't be gnawing away at her from the inside anymore. Nobody winds up changed in a dramatic, spectacular manner, but that's the way things usually are in life. More of a cathartic ending. The story could end satisfactorily here, or continue. I don't know if I will ever rewatch the series as a whole, but I enjoyed watching it once.
