(Two episodes watched):

After something like two and a half years of baseball anime in the form of Ace of the Diamond, I am somewhat burnt out. Perhaps that's why I wasn't all that excited by episode one of Battery. It looks like the theme will be an initial conflict between the pitcher, Takumi, who sees baseball as a highly competitive game in which winning is everything, versus the catcher, Kou, who prizes the comradeship and simple fun of the game. Presumably they will become close friends and reach an effective compromise between their attitudes. But that's a guess, because episode one didn't make it clear, and neither one of them leapt out at me as a particularly interesting person. Maybe there's some mental dividing line between characters who strike me as detailed and realistic enough for me to suspend disbelief and take them seriously, and those who still seem like fictional characters. These guys could have been much worse, and maybe they still will develop satisfactorily, but I do not have time to watch every anime that comes out, so whether or not the cast leaps out at me as intriguing people within the space of the first episode may be a test which new anime must pass in order for me to watch it. At any rate, I was neither excited nor repelled by episode one of Battery. I was unsure whether I would watch any more, but as it worked out I watched episode two as well. However, it only crystalized my problems with this show (and revealed some new ones). All of a sudden Takumi is determined that Kou must be his catcher--when did that happen? I wondered if I had missed an episode. The emotions of these characters swing like a pendulum without much explanation; Takumi is jealous and arrogant one minute, and hates himself the next. The drama seems forced and unconvincing. I decided to quit this show; the main characters haven't convinced me to like them or care how well they do on the playing field.
