Flying Witch is yet another slice-of-life comedy, this one revolving around a city witch named Makoto moving to the countryside with relatives who get to learn of the customs of witchcraft from her as she continues her own training in it. This one is a nudge up from most slice-of-life comedies in that it actually takes its time to explore its elements of witchcraft with Makoto that her younger cousin Chinatsu gradually takes interest in and a couple more witches also make an appearance. Plus, the characters have a bit more dimension to them that make them relateable and not feel totally like your run-of-the-mill comedy character defined by whatever personality and quirk they have. The series mixes the everyday tribulations of Makoto's time with her relatives with some light comedy milking off a number of the bizarre character quirks and magical elements offered up. It also doesn't hurt that this is a beautiful-looking series with gorgeous scenic shots, detailed character designs, and nicely animated shots of the witches in flight. While your mileage may vary on enjoying slice-of-life titles, I'd at least watch this one at least once since it is different from the norm from your typical slice-of-life comedy.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3177#628]
(One-and-a-half episodes watched):

'Laid-back magic' might be the word to describe a sub-genre of anime in which things like magic and the occult are treated not as sensational, shocking things but as everyday facts of life which are about as startling as a trip to the convenience store. Everybody is seemingly aware of them, but the shock has worn off, they are not seen as dangerous, and nobody seems to care much anymore. Sort of like being a soldier in peacetime. Flying Witch would fall into such a sub-genre. There is little attempt to conceal Makoto's status as a witch; you get the feeling that either witchcraft is common practice or people are too apathetic to notice it. I felt that this show got off to a rather slow start, as only two things happened which would demand witchcraft and few questions are asked about why Makoto (who is clearly just a beginner as a witch) went into it or how she became one or things like that. I still had little idea where this show was going after watching the first episode, or how good it would be. The OP/ED sequences indicate that a number of other supernatural characters will appear over the course of the series. But it did seem to have a sort of sweet, pleasing tone to it, the characters get some personality, and I was curious how witchcraft would be explained, so I decided to watch some more. Episode two (or at least the first half of it), however, wasn't about explaining what's going on but rather was about the visit of a 'Harbinger'. I became bored; a Harbinger is a slightly interesting thing but the show didn't go into much detail and it didn't seem worth half an episode. I got no indication that answers to my questions would be forthcoming, and I don't recall any laugh-worthy jokes. So I quit after the half episode and watched something else.
