In modern Japan there are seven "Kings" who share power with their fellow clansmen. The Blue King Reishi Munakata, the leader of the Blue Clan "Scepter 4," held great responsibilities on his back. The tower that Gold King Daikaku Kokujouji supervised called the "Dresden Slate" was still on his mind, and he felt a great burden by killing the previous Red King, Mikoto Suoh. On the other hand, the former Red Clan "HOMRA" clansman Anna Kushina experienced the attacks from the Green Clan "Jungle" and awakened as the next Red King. By doing this, she bound her comrades through a strong bond once again. Finally, White Clan members Neko and Kuroh believe that the White King Yashiro is still alive, and seek his whereabouts. However, it was not just them searching for the White King. With "Jungle" once again jumping back into action, the fates of the various Kings are brought together.

Thank God for whoever writes synopses of new anime at ANN, because it must be an onerous task making sense of some of these shows and maintaining interest long enough to catch the details. Mine would have gone something like this: some mystical object determines who enjoys good fortune and several clans, each identified by a color and led by a 'King', fight over it. Characters are thoroughly bishounen (and can fly somehow). I decided recently that instead of repeating the usual list of complaints (like, about there being just enough personality for one character spread over a couple dozen) it might be more fun to read (and write) reviews if I listed what changes I felt might save the show. But Return has really painted me into a corner in the sense that I am so unimpressed that I think it might be easier to dump the whole show and start from scratch than to try to salvage it. At the end I felt like pulling my hair out and was asking myself if I had ever seen another opening episode which left me knowing (and caring) less about where the story would go. It gives me virtually nothing to work with. Maybe making the fights more realistic--changing them from smooth talk and a few impressive but ineffectual blows traded between two dudes who are both obviously too cool to get hurt into ones in which somebody might actually be injured. The former sort of fight is boring, not cool. Maybe in episode two basically declare episode one to have been nothing but a prologue, and brush it aside. Maybe concentrate on one or two characters on each side and develop them--perhaps they were once friends but now have a tragic grudge against one another--rather than provide heaping helpings of guys who are handsome in countless slightly different ways but universally devoid of personality (there is one female fighter, but her personality consists of her bouncing boobs). Saving this show wouldn't be easy; and it's not exactly likely either.
