Featuring a battle between humans and an apparent alien race of robots, Detonator Orgun is typical sci-fi fare depicting humanity's struggle against an alien menace set in a far-off future and a human with a psychic link to the titular robot of the OVA being humanity's hope against it with revelations about the aliens having a closer link to humanity than expected. While it has a few bright spots such as having some focus on Shindo's struggle to retain his humanity in spite of the link he shares to Orgun and some slick mecha designs from Masami Ohbari's animation direction, the series is still typical sci-fi fare to a great extent and the final episode suffers from some rather convenient deus ex machina to resolve the threat brought about by the Evoulders. Overall, Detonator Orgun is a rather forgettable entry in the mecha genre and only worth checking out if you're a diehard mecha anime fan.
