In Kyoto, there are three kinds of residents: humans, tanuki, and tengu. Shimogamo Yasaburou is the third son of the Shimogamo tanuki family. His father, Souichirou, had been the head of Kyoto tanuki community until he was eaten by the human members of "Friday Club." While taking care of an old tengu, fighting with other tanuki, and playing with a psychic human girl, Yasaburou approaches the truth of his father's death.

Eccentric Family is a comedy-drama focused on Yasaburo and his tanuki family going through their everyday ordeals while trying to sort through the events leading up to their father's death at the hands of the Friday Club. The drama with the father's death had more my interest than the comedy here as I was mostly indifferent to it since it relied on the tanuki milking their transforming abilities to torment others and some of the eccentric personalities found with the characters. The drama in Eccentric Family involves exploring the events leading up to the death of Shimogamo's father which get more focus in the title's second half. More facts concerning the events leading to the father's death are revealed and more sinister motives are unveiled concerning a member of their family desiring influence among the tanuki. Relations between tanuki and humans are explored as well which are shown to be a rather tense one as tanuki are shown to have fear those among the Friday Club for rather obvious reasons. Character depth is a bit limited in the series since the ongoing plot involving the hostilities between tanuki and humans got center stage, though some characters do get a decent amount of fleshing out such as Benten and some among the Shimogamo family. The series is okay for what it offers and has a unique premise to it, though it would have been nice to get a bit more fleshing out of the characters to give them more depth instead of having them feel like two-dimensional archetypes. It's not the strongest work I've seen from PA Works, but Eccentric Family does make for a decent time killer.
