(Both episode watched):

Ah, I see now: I watched the second episode first, and since the plot of Terraformars is such a confused mess with too many characters to keep track of, I confused these extras with the main story. These two OVAs are in fact a prequel of sorts, since they are about the earlier BUGS 2 mission. One thing we learn is that the present-day President of an important nation/organization (Japan?) was in fact a survivor of that mission, a bit of information that the general public is apparently unaware of. Terraformars is a confused mess, but it's a fun confused mess; here most of the BUGS 2 people meet a swift end but a handful hold on and fight for their lives against the usual horde of bugmen. Perhaps there's a third OVA on the way, because I don't recall the President blasting off from Mars and making a clean getaway yet. While the longterm plot of the TV series is confused and unfocused, this story is relatively easy to follow and the short term, episodic action remains exciting and engaging. We are introduced to yet another down-on-his-luck guy who enlisted for the mission out of desperation, and we can sympathize with him. We also learn something about a conspiracy to betray the mission, though not much; I don't know if that part of the tale will ever make sense. Also the 'Captain' (or whatever his name was), who is a strange guy who definitely knows something. Numerous humans buy the farm here, but I wouldn't call these OVAs, and the series in general, 'violent', because most of the violence is directed against the disgusting insect men, and the story is told in such a way that when humans get hurt we regret it. Again, the longterm plot of the TV series may never make sense, but I enjoy the action and the camaraderie among the characters there and here in this spinoff as well, and one thing that should be clear at the end of even Terraformars is whether anybody is going to make it back to Earth alive, which is one thing I definitely want to know.
