Juuou Mujin no Fafnir
(Part of one episode watched):
Well, one advantage of watching at least part of every new anime every season that you are unfamiliar with is that you catch the good ones. I seldom assign a rating of 'Watch' anymore because I sift through the supply of new shows and end up only watching the ones that deserve a 'Rent' or better. The disadvantage is that you have to watch at least a little of all the crappy shows as well, for example Unlimited Fafnir. X years ago, this (fill in the blank) crazy thing happened' seems to be a common way of starting off new series nowadays. It just flings us into the midst of a problem without needing to offer any explanation. And one or more people have a supernatural power that might just fix this mysterious problem. But Bambi-eyed, cute, bubbly girls cannot coexist with intriguing, original drama, and the moment they began to appear I realized that the prospects for Fafnir had virtually ceased to exist. Yet another giveaway were the teenage boy's wildest dream come true bits like a nude girl appearing before you, or being admitted to an all-girls school. God, can we have something fresh I asked myself as I watched. This show cries out 'average'. Dragons! sexy girls! magic!--but don't ask for originality. I fast-forwarded through most of the episode, noticed nothing of interest, and gladly wrote off Fafnir as another mediocre show that didn't dare to try anything new. I seldom assign a rating of 'Watch' anymore, but I do leave an awful lot of shows 'Unevaluated'. I wish I could put it into words, but there is some sort of aura of mediocrity which shows like this exude, through the dialogue of the characters, perhaps, and as soon as I detect it I turn around and run away.
