Unevaluated Devil Doll [series:2878#752]
[3 episodes watched]

A serious scenario with decent main characters. Unfortunately the discrimination element apprears to be rather strong, causing lots of side characters to act one-dimensionally, and lots of fights to occur for no other reason than this one. Tatsuya's abilities will be explained in detail, adding another strong element of "magic technobabble" to this show. My best comparison would be Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai with no harem element so far (but a hint of incest instead).

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2878#628]
(One episode watched):

Another attempt to make us feel sorry for magicians who are subjected to prejudice? It seems that almost every magic-themed show nowadays includes that element, though I don't know why. Did it happen a lot in Harry Potter? Anyway, the characters here seem to be getting some development, which is something that many anime foolishly skip. Interesting characters are an indispensable part of a good story; and the story must have priority, not magic, because magic itself isn't all that interesting. Word has gotten around in Japan that if you make an anime which involves magic it will get plenty of viewers whether it's good or not, and every studio is racing to take advantage. So far, Mahouka doesn't seem to revel in magic for magic's sake, and instead a host of characters are introduced in a fairly believable manner. I'd much rather be given a hint of what Tatsuya's 'secret' is than watch yet another magic fight. At the end of episode one it's still unclear whether the plot and characters or magic will have priority in Mahouka. This show hasn't failed the first test, but it hasn't passed it either. When time came around for a second episode, I found little enthusiasm for this show within me and dispensed with it.
