Nobunagun is clearly a series that doesn't take itself seriously as it focuses on high school student Sio becoming involved with a military organization with members who are E-Gene Holders, those possessing the genetic structure of famous historical figures who can manifest the special abilities of said figures through using AU balls. The E-Gene Holders are tasked with thwarting an alien threat destroying human cities near areas with large bodies of water. The series is pretty much an action-comedy with characters possessing over-the-top personas that are apparently based off the more eccentric quirks that the E-Gene Holders possess from the historical figure whose power they draw on and the action can get quite crazy throughout the show thanks to these eccentric quirks, especially when Sio draws upon her E-Gene abilities as Nobunaga to strategize plans and go nuts firing off on alien threats. I personally found the comedy to be hit or miss, more so for hits. For the most part, I didn't mind the show's hot-blooded character types and over-the-top action since the series knows that it isn't a serious affair. However, the show usually got in the bad habit of allowing Sio to get sexually harassed for cheap laughs by some of her fellow E-Gene Holders and even a case of naughty tentacles popping up later in the show. Also if you're looking for any kind of depth to this series, you will be quite disappointed since most of the characters in this series are simply stock archetypes that are bumped up to eleven from the cast's eccentric quirks. Still if you don't mind action-comedy, Nobunagun is a decent addition to the genre offering up some fun over-the-top action and exaggerated characters that make it worth a look at the very least.

(Two episodes watched): Based on the title, at first I thought this was the same series as Nobunaga the Fool. The first episode begins with a famous warlord, Nobunaga, dying in battle and apparently being reincarnated as a modern day teenage girl. That gave me a laugh and raised my hopes a good deal; how could something good not come out of such a bizarre premise? But the remainder of the show seemed pretty lame and my hopes soon sank as low or lower than they had been at the beginning. Our introduction to Ogata, as a shy and unpopular teenager, was pretty dull and then the second half of the episode devolved into a battle with weird monsters called 'Evolutionary Invasion Objects'. There's no quicker way to spoil an intriguing premise than to use it as nothing more than a fighting show. This was neither funny enough to work as a comedy nor plausible enough to work as an action series. Just hammering away at weird aliens, without any explanation of what's going on, is positively boring. Ogata remains pretty much a stranger, and the animation is uninspired. I suppose I should watch another episode to get the remainder of the premise (since it hasn't been formally explained yet, something good might still come of it) but I won't be holding my breath in expectation of a brilliant one. The fact that I did get a bit of a laugh at the very end kind of obligates me to do so; but I sort of wish the episode had been an unqualified failure so that I wouldn't have to. I did watch a second episode, but to my frustration it sat squarely on the line between 'worth watching' and 'not worth watching' without tipping either way. On the one hand, Ogata gets a bit of character development which is good; on the other, DOGOO, EIOs, and the war against them seem pretty absurd and don't excite me. Maybe that's because with the lack of character development I don't feel that many likeable people are at risk.
