After his guardian uncle's business fails, William Twining, an intelligent young noble, finds himself in a dire financial situation. With no funds for his school tuition, he searches his house until he comes upon the basement. There, he accidentally summons ↗Dantalion, who recognizes William as a descendant of Solomon, and the Elector — the individual that will choose a substitute ruler for when the Emperor of Hell, Lucifer, rests. From that moment on, William's life is irrevocably interwoven with the supernatural world as other demonic candidates for substitute king vie for his nomination and Heaven attempts to retrieve his soul.

Devils and Realist appears to be fangirl bait considering all the attractive guys masquerading around in the show's focus on our lead William being targeted by demons to become their new ruler of Hell. While the premise seems fun on paper as William's realist beliefs clash with the fantastical situation he is in with the demons as they use magic and whisk him into parallel worlds, the characters are mostly one-trick ponies as they don't get much dimension beyond fulfilling specific character types, giving off vibes of shounen-ai at points and the plot becoming a bit of a mess in its final episodes due to rushed storytelling involving William's connection to Solomon, the Biblical ruler of Israel he is a descendant of. Unless you're a fangirl ogling for bishounen with a smidge of supernatural elements added to the mix, you aren't really missing out on much with Devils and Realist.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2769#628]
(Five episodes watched):

The first time I started watching this show, the first scene made it look like a BL series and after a minute or two I switched to something else. But it turns out that that first impression was misleading; the second time around I was pleased to discover that this show has some decent jokes and is funnier than it first seemed. It seems to be a mix of comedy and magical combat; I'm not much interested in the occult or power struggles in hell, but if some of the story involves demon lord Dantalion here on earth (as the old transfer student gag at the end suggested) it might be fun. The characters seem to have some life to them. I guess the question is , which of the two elements, comedy or action, will have priority?

Maybe this show will have a touch of BL after all. Dantalion implies that he and William have met before, got quite intimate (a past lifetime?), and he can't understand why William doesn't recall it. Also, his argument that humans are more evil than demons was intriguing. This show is feeling like a high Watch or a low Rent. If it weren't for the decent jokes I would definitely quit watching, since my standards have risen recently and just Watch-level shows aren't always good enough for me anymore. There are some odd twists, like William's former butler Kevin being sort of promoted to a higher rank than he holds. But all things considered, the story is not all that exciting. I don't know how William will handle his authority to choose an interim ruler of Hell, but I don't really care all that much either. It's a strange scenario (what would you do if you were suddenly placed in the same position?), but it just feels as if not all that much is being made of it. Maybe William doesn't have enough at risk; what's the worst thing that could happen to him? We all know he's not going to get just plain killed. Dantalion seems like a more intriguing character, anyway. And the jokes alone aren't really good enough to carry this show to anything beyond an average level.

Come to think of it, the angle of William as a 'realist' who refuses to believe things like demons and ghosts, hasn't been used much. When strange men who clearly have fantastic powers appear all around you, and you even pay a brief visit to hell, it's hard to buy anyone still refusing to believe. Maybe if the show had been handled in a more mysterious manner, and the characters were played as strange men who might be demons, but it's unclear, it would have worked better. As it is, I can't really identify with William, who shrugs off these bizarre happenings while I would have probably suffered a nervous breakdown. I think I will drop this show. It is probably a 'Watch' for those more into demons and stuff like that, but I don't particularly care how this Underlord of Hell business works out, the jokes aren't funny enough to warrant my time anymore, and in general when Realist's turn to be watched comes up on my viewing schedule, I wish it was time for something else.

My favorite line: "I'll never trust a demon again!" -William
