I went into R&R Mi looking forward to some more of the modestly amusing jokes about the boy who looks so mature that he is often mistaken for some sort of adult child molester, but the difference between this season and the previous two was so glaring that I almost wondered if this was the same show at all. The animation style is totally different, to such an extent that it was hard to convince myself that these are the same principal characters that I'm already familiar with. Maybe I was biased, but the animation seemed distinctly inferior as well. The characters have an odd sort of fluid look to them, perhaps due to a low frame rate. It could be just my imagination, but the technique which the director employs to tell jokes seems different as well. I didn't know if I could get used to this or not.

I guess I was prepared for enough difference in episode two that it didn't bother me nearly as much as episode one had. On the other hand, I don't recall any seriously funny jokes. We did see Atsumi's friend, who has a crush on Atsushi and has yet to completely grasp what's strange about him, though she has made some progress. The continuation was nice. The previous seasons made use of the sexual suggestiveness which is bound to happen when such odd characters exist. It was played for laughs, and to a certain extent it worked, since other people's misconceptions caused the trouble while Atsushi and Atsumi were completely blameless themselves. But I haven't seen all that much of the same technique in season three (it finally dawned on me that this is season 'Mi' because each season is linked to a musical note--Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La).

Actually, with time I got used to this show and didn't mind the changes from the earlier seasons. It isn't brilliant but it is modestly amusing. It's hard to draw conclusions about short series in general, since there's little more they can do with the time available than tell a couple jokes. Things like character development are scarce. R&R can only crack jokes based on the mistaken perceptions which Atsushi and Atsumi naturally provoke. Given that, this was an Ok show which I don't regret watching at all. The final episode offered a touch of closure, but I wouldn't mind a season 'Fa' as well.
