This third TV anime in the Monogatari continues on with the mix of perverted humor and paranormal happenings that affect Araragi and the girls that are involved with him. This "second season" serves to either explore elements of the characters that were never addressed in earlier seasons of the franchise with Nadeko and Kaiki getting a good amount of focus in a couple arcs or to resolve lingering character developments from earlier seasons as is the case with Mayoi, Hanekawa and eventually Nadeko. The only arc that I found questionable in its relevance for this season was Mayoi Jiganshi which didn't really do much to add or advance things to the series in anyway. Also, the franchise is still ongoing here as there are hints dropped of something sinister arising with what Kaiki encounters in the final episodes of the series and Kanbaru's arc was never animated in this series, which I hear would be done at some point next year. Beyond that, not much else to really say. If you've enjoyed earlier installments in the Monogatari franchise, this is a definite recommendation to check out as Second Season continues on with exploring the paranormal happenings that affect Araragi and pals.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2755#628]
(One episode watched):

The -gatari series in general are shows which I have mixed feelings about; on the bright side, they are clearly shows which have a good deal of wit to them, and have been endowed with more talent than most anime series. On the not-so-bright side, I find them difficult to watch, because the complex dialogue, and the habit of throwing in little texted jokes and scene numbers every now and then demands a lot of pausing and reading, which spoils the timing. The texted jokes only appear for a fraction of a second, and I wonder if even Japanese viewers have time to make sense of them. Does a language where each character represents an entire word rather than just a letter make that possible? If I spoke and read Japanese fluently this show would no doubt be infinitely easier to watch and much more fun. All the reading somehow makes it more difficult for me to keep track of the main plot. And the main plots are pretty weird, and the animation is stylized and chock-full of metaphors (if that's the right term) which doesn't make it any easier to make sense of them. Episode one, for example, involves an encounter with a giant white tiger while a character is walking to school; it may have been a premonition of a serious event that happens later on, but I do not have the slightest idea why a tiger would be appropriate here. This stuff doesn't stick very well in my memory and I can't remember much about what happened last time. So, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I sort of wish they would stop making new seasons of this story, because I feel a duty to watch them, but don't get all that much enjoyment out of it. Anyone who doesn't mind, or even notice these problems will in all likelihood be delighted with Monogatari 2nd season (although it is in fact the third).
