Samurai are like the Japanese equivalent of cowboys--historical figures who are seen as the epitome of the virtues which a country holds dear. As such, the qualities of the good guy ones come to be wildly exaggerated, sometimes to the point of what we get in Kanetsugu to Keiji. These guys are superhumanly strong, invincible martial artists, and brilliant philosophers to boot. In short, they are so awesomely cool that they don't seem to express much facial emotion, since they can never be taken by surprise and know that they cannot be beaten--not by mere humans, that is. They seem to have a standardized look on their faces, and if you shaved their hair there would be no way to tell them apart. But they are like Superman without Kryptonite. The thought occurred to me while watching episode one of how much I would love to see a series about Samurai in which the characters feel fear and anger like ordinary soldiers, and whether they live or die is largely up to luck, and they know it. I just have nothing whatsoever in common with these guys, so I don't feel much interest in them. It seems like this show will be about two supermen who once fought on opposite sides in a now past war, and now run into one another again. Maybe they'll become friends or maybe they'll be bitter rivals and ultimately duel. But whatever the case may be, they almost seem to be ignoring the rest of the human race, since it's of little interest to them.
