The girls learn of this and deal with it in their own ways. If you were to ask me to sum up this movie in one word, I'd have to say "contrived". That's because despite the fact that this anime movie is labeled as the "Story B" ending to the franchise, and that it is supposed to be based on the established canon of the manga, the writers of this atrocity basically dump the canon so that they can come up with contrived problems to be resolved.

The biggest contrivance is the sudden, BS demand that Negi choose a partner in 24 hours, thereby causing all of his probationary partners to lose all of their memories of magic and such. Of course, the HUGE problem here is that (1) Negi's father had multiple contracts and (2) many of Negi's probationary partners WON'T lose their memories due to their involvement in magic and the magic world via other means, to say nothing of other class members who won't lose their memories for the same reason.

The second biggest contrivance is suddenly having Mars show up to crash into Earth (minus any massive, tidal and other disruptions to Earth) so that Negi doesn't even get his 24 hours. Of course, his solution can be seen from here to Mars (in its proper orbit), and my eyes just rolled the whole time at the sheer stupidity of it all.

Between the two contrivances, the writers attempt to give all the girls stuff to do or say, even if it is meaningless. Because everything is so bloody contrived, there's zero emotional impact despite the writers going, "But you MUST feel sad here 'cause folks are going to lose their memories!" Of course, even the writers couldn't escape their own plot holes and tries to address them by throwing out more BS, or just trying to dodge the issue.

Basically, if you were a fan of the manga and hated the way the manga ended, this movie's ending will make you thing the manga's ending is sheer brilliance.

The art and animation are shockingly bad for a movie. I remember a time when an anime movie meant that it received a very nice budget per minute compared to a TV series. This movie looks as though it were done on an average TV anime budget. Frankly, it is just not what one expects from an anime movie production.

Bottom line: This is a terrible movie. The ONLY reason to own it as I do (Japanese version) is for the pactio card set that came with it. If you want to know more, I do go into greater details on my blog.
